I remembered the girl I used to see every year at Moonlight Academy, vivid and fearless, full of reckless vitality. She felt like an entirely different person now.

“Hungry,” Laila said. Her cracked lips parted just enough to let the word out.

That was cute.

I almost smiled, but forced my face straight. “Everyone’s hungry. Endure it.”

“Tired,” she added weakly. “Standing hurts.”

“Laila.” I deliberately kept my tone stern, a hint of mischief creeping in. “Did you know that since Rydar Kingdom was founded, no warrior has ever killed that many enemies in their very first battle? Not even your father. You were extraordinary. So straighten you back and walk out of this tent properly.”

Laila’s ears flicked. She lifted her chin, puffed out her chest, and strutted out of the command tent, hands on her hips, limping along with exaggerated pride.

I couldn’t help laughing.

But as the laughter faded, something tight and bitter rose in

my chest.

Such a good girl. If only the Moon Goddess hadn’t denied me the chance to be her fate mate.

Just then, my beta stepped in. “Your Highness. Latest report. Holt and General Duffy will reach the camp in ten days.”

Ten days?

Good.

When the time came, I was going to ask Holt exactly why he still hadn’t marked Laila.

An unmarked Luna would never be respected within a pack.

Third–Person POV:

In the city of Irilla, the Marshals of the Solantia and Ovila kingdoms, Silas Kincaid and Victor Wilde respectively, stood shoulder to shoulder atop the city walls. Together, they watched the distant forces of the Rydar Kingdom.

“Our people confirmed it,” Victor said. “That female general named Maris is with Rydar’s reinforcements. She’ll arrive here within ten days.”

Silas‘ fist clenched so hard his veins bulged. “That one,” he said coldly, “I want her captured alive at any cost.”

Victor frowned, “She’s just a beta she–wolf. What kind of hatred could she possibly have earned from you?”

Silas didn’t answer,

But the fury burning in his eyes flared even brighter.

Curiosity flickered, but there was no time to dwell on it. They could not delay opening the gates.

Once the gates opened, the siege turned into close combat.

This was real slaughter!

“By the Moon! How did the gates open?”

“Rydar’s werewolves have broken in!”

Inside the city, the Solantia and Ovila werewolves, completely unprepared, finally reacted and counterattacked in panic.

But it was already too late!

Laila didn’t stay behind. She quickly regrouped with Manu and the others, leading three thousand warriors to shift into wolf form and charge toward the Lenir granaries.

This was her mission.

Before the enemy could burn the supplies, she had to seize hope back into their own hands.

Before dawn broke, they reached Lenir.

Ovila soldiers were guarding the area.

Laila didn’t even slow down. With a howl that signaled the start of battle, she charged first.

There were not a lot of granary guards, only several hundred, so they were quickly defeated.

Laila shifted back into human form and entered the granary. Inside, grain was piled like small mountains. The back courtyard was stacked with meat. Because of the bitter cold, much of it was buried in ice. She pried some free, saliva almost spilling.

But soon, Ovila reacted as well. They dispatched twenty thousand werewolf warriors to seize the granaries.

Three thousand against twenty thousand.

The disparity was overwhelming.

Every Rydar warrior tensed their muscles, but no one retreated.

Laila swept her gaze across every face, her voice hoarse from roaring, “Look at the land beneath your feet!

“It carries our fathers‘ blood and buries our brothers‘ bones!
