Holt’s face burned red, words failing him.

The overwhelming shame and humiliation of being exposed in front of everyone consumed him, followed by an unexpected surge of anger at Laila.

Why hadn’t she told them beforehand?

Had she deliberately waited for this moment, just to see him humiliated like a fool?

His silence only made Maris more agitated. She snapped sharply, “We earned our battle merits with our lives! How we use them is our choice! I’ve already compromised enough for being the second Luna! I am willing to fight alongside Holt on the battlefield and to risk life and limb! It’s Laila who refuses to share honor and reward, and insists on dissolving the mate bond!”

Inside the tent, silence fell like death.

Laila spoke softly. “Eight months ago, assassins from the Solantia Kingdom infiltrated Silvermoon Pack. Everyone in the den, except those who moved with me to Ironclaw Pack, was killed.”

The commanders could hardly believe it. Kain and his five sons had fallen at Vagen, and now the rest of the family had been massacred. It was nothing short of a tragedy.
