“Do you dare accept my challenge, Laila Conlay?

“A bloodmoon duel!

“Let every soldier see with their own eyes who truly deserves to command the armored war wolves!”

Everyone present froze.

No one expected Maris to call for a duel on the spot, and a lifeordeath duel at that.

Holt, in particular, went pale. He knew Laila’s strength, and that Maris had no chance of winning.

“Maris, by the Moon, you cannot…”

He tried to stop her, but she flung his hand away. “Don’t stop me, Holt!” She turned to Laila, her amber eyes sharp with challenge. “Laila, if everything they say is true, if you’re really that powerful, accept my challenge. Prove it to me!”

“Accept it! Make her bleed! Let her screams echo through the camp!”

Nita roared furiously in Laila’s mind.

Laila’s brow furrowed.

She was about to step forward when a long, strong hand gripped her upper arm.

It was Samuel.

He shook his head at her, then turned his cold gaze toward Maris.

“Get out.”

His voice was calm, not raised, but every wolf in the tent felt their neck hairs stand on end.

This was the absolute pressure of a highranking Alpha over lowerranked wolves.

Maris staggered as if struck, letting out a low groan. Blood seeped from the corner of her mouth.

She was forced down onto one knee, her tail stiff and tucked between her legs.

Laila froze. She knew Samuel rarely used his bloodline suppression so directly…

But this was his bluntest way of shielding her from an unnecessary conflict.

“Your Highness!”

Sensing Samuel at the edge of explosion, Holt clutched Maris tightly, forcing her to bow her head. “Please forgive her! She acted impulsively. She just spoke without thinking. She never intended to challenge your authority or the camp rules!”

“Those who cannot obey orders leave Vagen immediately. I need soldiers who follow commands without question.”

Samuel’s final word rang out.

“Yes! We will obey orders completely!”

Holt practically dragged Maris out of the tent, disappearing into the night bey

entrance.

Once they left, a heavy silence fell over the tent.

Everyone wanted to ask about the tragedy that had occurred, but looking at Laila’s sorrowful expression, no one dared speak.

How could they?

Even the gentlest question would be like stabbing a knife into the stillfresh wound in Laila’s heart…

So no one spoke. They simply shed silent tears together.
