After Silas and his army left, only the sound of the wind remained across the wasteland.
I looked at Holt. “If you want to save Maris, just take your trusted men up the mountain.”
I said that to save some of their dignity.
If the Solantians were planning to pay back the shame their crown prince suffered, whatever was waiting up there was going to be stomach–turning.
But Holt stared at the ridge, his throat bobbing as he swallowed hard. “I’m worried the Solantians left an ambush up there. Laila, can you bring your soldiers and come with me?”
“You sure?”
“I’m sure.”
Holt nodded.
“You can’t fully trust what Silas said. If you come with me, we can ask Maris together. If she admits it in front of you, then…”
His face darkened. He couldn’t even finish the sentence.
If Maris admitted it, what would he do? What could he do?
Those were mistakes that couldn’t be fixed. Lives that could never be brought back.
“Fine.”
I let out a tiny, cold smile and agreed immediately,
I gave you a way out, Holt. This is your choice.
The mountain path twisted like a snake. After almost an hour, it finally opened up into a newly cleared clearing.
A rough–built wooden cabin stood at the center. Screams spilled out from its gaps, along with the thick smell of blood and filth.

Holt’s fur stood on end. He slammed the door open and rushed inside.
Pitch black.
Torches flooded the room with light.
Nineteen bodies were lying all over the floor, naked.
Including Maris.

The smell hit us hard–rotting flesh, waste, and the sour scent of fear pheromones mixed together.
Their bodies were torn and covered in blood, and their penises had been brutally cut off.
Maris was curled up in the corner. A twisted halfmoon shackle burned into her cheek–the Solantian slave brand.
There was no trace of Holt’s marking scent left on her anymore.
Like the scent that used to prove she belonged to him had been burned away.
full of rage. Holt froze for a few seconds. Then he suddenly turned and glared at me, his eyes “Laila! You knew it would be like this–you wanted everyone to see her like this, didn’t you?!”
I just stared at him.
What an idiot.
Even now, all he cared about was her “shame.” He couldn’t see the mountain of dead bodies that led to this moment.
He grabbed a torch and rushed inside, wrapping Maris in his cloak.
The other soldiers hurried to take off their coats, covering the broken bodies on the floor.
On the way down the mountain, the soldiers started whispering like buzzing insects.
“Their penises were cut off. That’s brutal…”
“General Duffy’s entire body was shaved. She’s lower than the lowest slave now…”
“She has a slave mark on her face… I can’t smell General Enclaw’s mark on her at all anymore…”

“By the Moon… What did they do to her?”
The wind howled, scattering their whispers across the dry grass.
I walked in front and never looked back.
Once you saw a truth like that, you couldn’t unsee it.

It would grow into a thorn stuck in your bones, pushing deeper every time you breathed.
Holt’s POV:
Back in Simonne Town, I immediately called a healer to treat Maris.
Almost none of her skin was unharmed–burn marks, shaved patches, and wounds meant to destroy a werewolf’s pride.
The healer’s hands shook while treating her. The strong smell of herbs mixed with blood filled the whole tent.
Finally, all her wounds were bandaged.
I dismissed the healer. It was just the two of us.
