If she didn't step in and stop him from acting on his reckless impulses, the situation with Ms. Sterling was only going to deteriorate further.
And when his mood inevitably tanked even deeper, the entire office would pay the price.
As his direct assistant, she’d be the first to suffer. Her life would become a living nightmare.
Mona took a steadying breath and looked at Zachary. "Sir, I really don't think we should freeze the funds. Ms. Sterling will be furious."
Zachary shot her a lethal glare. "Let her be furious. Do I look like I'm scared of her?"
Mona was struck speechless.
He was so unbelievably stubborn.
If he was so tough and unaffected, why had he gone completely out of his way just to see her today?
Ms. Sterling had offered him the perfect out by inviting him to lunch. He had acted like a complete brat, rejected it out of pure spite, and what—actually expected her to shamelessly beg him to stay?
Heh... he brought this entirely upon himself.
She genuinely didn't want to deal with him anymore.
But he was her boss. If it weren't for the massive monthly salary and top-tier corporate benefits, she would have slammed a resignation letter onto his desk right then and there.
She'd happily tell him she was done.
Pulling her thoughts back to the present, Mona forced a placating smile. "You're a professional man, sir. You shouldn't stoop to playing petty games with her."
Zachary's face darkened further. He narrowed his eyes at her. "Mona, remember exactly whose secretary you are, whose payroll you're on, and whose problems you're supposed to be solving. What, did Yvaine slip you a bribe? Is that why you're defending her so fiercely?"
Mona: "...No."
Zachary's glare sharpened. "Did she plant you as a spy? Did she promise you a major promotion the second she marries me and joins the Lowell family?"
Mona: "...No."
"Heh." Zachary let out a bitter, mocking sneer. "Well, let me burst that little bubble for you. I'm never marrying her. We broke up."
Mona blinked. "I see."
So they had actually broken up. No wonder he was acting like a rabid dog.
Heh... serves him right!
Mona immediately shut her mouth and decided to let him self-destruct.
Zachary glared at her silence. "Why aren't you speaking?"
Mona genuinely had no idea what he wanted to hear.
