The taxi pulled up outside Colbert Group, and Sharon hopped out right away.
She barely had one foot on the sidewalk when she spotted a delivery guy rushing in, arms crammed with a huge bouquet of red roses.
That wrapping, that card—she'd know them anywhere. It was from that fancy flower shop Gary always ordered from.
Sharon's heart squeezed tight. She curled her fingers into fists before she even thought about it.
She hurried to keep up, slipping into the elevator with him. She caught a glimpse of the message on the card, "Happy birthday, Chloe. From your love." It felt like a needle jabbed straight through her chest.
Today wasn't just her and Gary's fifth anniversary—it was Chloe's birthday too.
His so-called "working overtime" was just a lie to hide from her—so he could throw a birthday party for his real wife at the office.
Sharon squeezed her fists so hard her knuckles turned pale.
She stepped off the elevator, and a familiar guy's voice hit her ears out of nowhere.
It was Gary, and his best buddy slash business partner, Mike Freeman.
"Mike." Gary's voice was deep and smooth, as gentle as ever. "Today's Sharon and my fifth anniversary. Can you take that bracelet I made her back home? Grab 999 white roses too and attach a card that says, 'Hold your hand, grow old with you.'"
Sharon tightened her grip on the bouquet in her arms until her fingers ached. Her feet felt glued to the floor.
Mike scoffed, sounding curious. "Dude, you're obsessed with Sharon. Everyone calls you the ultimate wife guy. But for real—if you love her this much, why'd you marry Chloe in the first place?"
The hallway went quiet, save for Gary's low laugh and the faint flicker of a cigarette butt in the dark.
"Sharon gets all my love out in the open.
"Chloe, though? She's fine hanging back in the shadows with me—obedient, hardworking. And she gave me that cute little girl. Marrying her's my way of making it up to her..."
Sharon stood in the shadows, all the color draining from her face. Nothing but cold, icy numbness was left.
"But it's been five years now," Mike cut in, his voice soft with sympathy. "Sharon wants a kid so bad, and you... you intentionally poured oil on the floor to make her slip and lose the baby. She still has no clue..."
He switched tones. "And now Chloe's pregnant with your second kid. Gary, aren't you scared Sharon will lose it if she finds out the truth?"
Sharon froze stiff—her blood might as well have turned to ice in her veins.
So that random fall back then wasn't an accident. He did it on purpose!
"Chloe'll keep this secret forever. Sharon'll never find out," Gary said, pausing for a beat before speaking with total confidence.
"I love Sharon," he added, sounding sincere. "When I had nothing, she stuck with me through four years of college. She scraped together five million for my startup and stood by me when I was at my lowest. But Chloe's put up with so much for me too. I can't let her down. I want both of 'em!"
He still remembered who'd been there for him when he was down and out.
But all those hard years they'd shared couldn't stop him from loving someone else.
How ridiculous.
Their voices faded as they walked away.
Sharon's eyes burned with tears. Through the office's glass windows, she could see the room decked out with flowers and a balloon wall—total party mode.
All the employees huddled around Chloe, who was grinning from ear to ear. And Gary stood right next to her, as close as could be.
They leaned into each other, eyes soft and loving.
"Happy birthday, Mrs. Colbert!"
"Wish you and Mr. Colbert forever happiness—and a baby soon!"
Cheers and well-wishes flooded over, pricking Sharon's heart like a million tiny needles.
So she's Mrs. Colbert!
She'll have a baby soon!
So during the three years she'd stayed home full-time, Chloe had already taken her place—openly calling herself "Mrs. Colbert", soaking up everyone's blessings.
No wonder Gary had forbidden her from stepping foot in the company after that.
White roses and red roses, my *ss!
