Chapter 174
“No, I didn’t…” Aiden said quietly.
The words hit Cassia like a physical blow. Her knees went weak, trembling beneath her as if they could no longer carry her weight.
“What do you mean, no?” she whispered, her voice cracking as fresh tears welled in her eyes.
“I’m sorry, Amelia,” Aiden said, his tone heavy, remorse deep in his voice. “When we got there, we found no one. They knew we were coming…they must have taken your family and left. But swear to you, I won’t stop until I find them.”
Cassia’s lips trembled. Then a bitter laugh escaped her. “You won’t stop?” she repeated, scoffing through her tears. “You already did, Aiden. You stopped the moment you decided to go without me.”
Tears spilled freely down her cheeks. Aiden’s chest tightened at the sight. Every drop of her pain cut into him, deeper than any blade could. Seeing her cry shattered something inside him and she didn’t even know it.
“Amelia…” he reached forward, his hand trembling slightly, but she stepped back, glaring at him through blurred vision.
“Maybe you didn’t look hard enough,” she snapped, voice trembling but laced with fury. “Maybe they were still there- maybe I could’ve found something if I was with you! I could’ve caught their scent, any trace! But you took that from me. You chose to tell Damien to drug me and ruin everything!” Her voice broke as she bit down hard on her lower lip, fighting another wave of tears. “I trusted you, Aiden. I really did. And I was a fool to do that… given how many times you’ve already broken my trust.”
“Amelia, my men searched every corner of that area,” he said, trying to stay calm, his voice steady but low. “They were gone. I was only trying to protect you—”
“Protect me?” she laughed sharply, her shoulders shaking. “You think I need your protection? You had one job back then when I was your Luna…just one….and you failed!” Her voice rose the anger she’d buried for years spilling out. “You couldn’t protect me then, and now you suddenly want to protect me? I don’t need it, Aiden. I don’t need you.” She took a step closer, glaring up at him. “I’m not the weak Luna you once looked in the eyes and rejected. I’m an Alpha now. I can protect myself.”
Aiden’s throat worked as he swallowed hard. His eyes softened, pain flickering across his features. “I know I made mistakes. Amelia. I know I failed you and Eva.” His voice was rough, heavy with guilt. “And you were never a weak Luna… I was the weak Alpha.”
She froze for a moment, his words cutting through her anger.
“I know you’re an Alpha now,” he continued softly, “but you’ll always be my Luna-the strong Luna who became an Alpha. And even if you become the strongest Alpha in the world, I’ll still protect you if I have to. I’ll never stop.”
For a second, something flickered in her eyes-vulnerability, pain, the echo of love-but it vanished just as quickly, replaced by cold fury.
“Trusting you was a mistake,” she said, her voice flat, deadly calm “Stay away from me, Aiden.”
She turned sharply and walked away, her back straight even as her heart cracked open.
Aiden stood there, running a hand through his hair, jaw tightening. The weight of her words crushed him. This was all his father’s fault. If Alaric hadn’t taken her family, none of this would have happened. Now they were gone, and only the Moon Goddess knew what his father had done to them.
His body tensed with rage as he turned and headed for his mother’s ward-where he knew his father would be.
Cassia pushed open the door to her office, shutting it behind her with a soft click. Her back pressed against the door as her strength finally gave out. She slid down slowly until she was sitting on the floor, her face buried in her hands.
Tears streamed down her cheeks, hot and relentless. Aiden’s words replayed over and over in her head-I didn’t find them.
Her family was gone. The people she had fought for, lived for, prayed for-they were in danger, and she was helpless to reach them. Her mother was sick, and she needed her now more than ever.
Alaric bent down, picking them up with narrowed eyes. His gaze flicked from the custom-made bullet to the phone. Recognition flashed briefly across his face before he quickly masked it with a cold smirk.
“What is this supposed to mean?” he asked, feigning confusion.
“Go on,” Aiden said tightly. “Play the recording.”
Alaric’s eyes narrowed, but he obeyed. He pressed play, and the hint crackle of a voice message filled the room-his own voice, snarling:
“What do you mean she’s gone?! Find her or I’ll kill you myself!
The sound froze the air. Luna Donna’s hand flew to her mouth shock.
Alaric’s eyes darted up, horror flashing across his face before he mashed the phone to the floor, crushing it under his heel with a sharp crack.
“How did you get your hands on this?” he demanded, his voice ting, tension rippling in the air.
“From one of your men,” Aiden said coldly. “The one you killed Jim. Because he let Tracy escape. And now I know you have Amelia’s family.”
For a split second, Alaric’s face hardened. Then he forced a sconmasking his unease. “You don’t know what you’re talking about, Aiden. You must be out of your damn mind.”
