Hand in hand, the family of three walked into the private dining room.

Once his coat was off, Darius couldn’t resist pulling Zara close, looking her up and down before fixing a frown on her stomach.

“Zara, you’ve put on weight everywhere else, so why is your belly still so small?”

Zara huffed, pretending to be annoyed. “Dad, did you come here to see me, or just the baby?”

“You, of course,” Darius said, quickly trying to smooth things over.

“Hmph!”

Willa watched their banter with a gentle smile. “You’ve forgotten what the doctor said. She’s carrying the baby towards the back, so she won’t show as early. Besides, she’s only filled out a little bit; the bump won’t be obvious for a while yet.”

Still, there was the faintest hint of a curve now, proof that the baby was indeed growing.

“I’m sorry, I completely forgot.” Darius gave his own cheek a couple of playful taps in penance.

“To make it up to you, I’m taking you shopping after dinner. Anything you want, Zara, it’s on me!”

“Oh, stop it. I have plenty of pocket money now; you two don’t need to spend yours on me.”

Darius shook his head. “That’s different. The money from your husband’s family is from them. You’re my daughter. I work hard specifically to spoil you, your mother, and my future grandchild. One has nothing to do with the other.”

Willa took Zara’s hand, laughing softly. “Your father has been hoarding his spending money for weeks. He insisted on saving it all to buy gifts for you and the baby once we got to Jindiwood. Don’t deny him the pleasure.”

Zara burst out laughing. “Wow, Dad’s been that disciplined? Fine, then. I suppose I’ll force myself to spend it!”

The three of them shared a warm laugh. Then, Darius grew serious again, unable to help himself. “Zara, why the sudden urge to work? I thought your life goal was to just slack? Or what’s that word… ‘slack off‘?”

“To ‘slack off, Dad,” Zara corrected.

“Right, right, ‘slack off.‘ I can never keep up with the slang you kids use.” Darius grinned.

“Back when I had classes every day, all I wanted to do was do nothing. But it’s different now. Doing nothing has gotten incredibly boring.”

Zara rested her chin in her hands, looking distressed. “Oriana is abroad, and Romise is working. I’m the only one stuck at home all day. I’m even sick of video games. And…”
