“Exactly! Noah even praised me for it. You guys can relax,” Zara said, shaking her head playfully. “The Caldwells are wonderful people. They take such good care of me and Oriana. You can rest one hundred, one thousand, ten thousand percent easy!”

She hugged Darius‘ arm and nuzzled against it affectionately. Seeing this, Darius finally let himself relax a little.

Darius said, tapping her forehead with a doting smile, “No one knows how to say no to you.”

Zara giggled. “You make it sound like I’m some adorable treasure everyone loves. In the whole world, only you two, Noah, and Oriana are willing to protect me like this.”

Willa smiled gently. “Your mother–in–law cares a great deal about you, doesn’t she? And Kenny treats you extremely well, too.”

“Him?” Zara scoffed without thinking. “He doesn’t treat me well at all. I’ll be relieved if he doesn’t drive me up the wall.”

The truth slipped out before she could catch it. The smiles on Darius and Willa’s faces stiffened instantly, replaced by worry. “Zara, what does that mean? What happened between you and Kenny?”

The corner of Zara’s mouth twitched. “It’s just… you know, we love to bicker. Sigh. It can’t be helped. I’m the favorite in the Caldwell family now, so he’s jealous. It’s nothing, really. You don’t need to worry.”

Zara invited them to stay at the Caldwell estate, but Darius and Willa politely declined. They also asked her not to mention their presence in Jindiwood to anyone.

“Why? What’s wrong with saying you’re here?”
