My Secret Husband Is My Cold Boss novel Chapter 20

"I'm not cutting ties."

Kimberly's attempts to care for her over the past few years had been genuine.

Wendy couldn't bring herself to be completely heartless.

She softened her tone. "Mom, what I wanted to tell you is that I have a boyfriend. As soon as my term as Chief Resident is over, we're getting married."

"From now on, you and Willa don't have to worry about me."

Wendy deliberately omitted the part about the flash marriage.

She knew Kimberly would interrogate her relentlessly, especially if she found out Sampson was working in the exact same hospital.

Kimberly's crying stopped abruptly.

"Wendy, when did you start dating? How come I didn't know?"

"Where is he from? What does he do? Is he a doctor here?"

"There's no rush. I'll tell you all the details when things are more stable."

If Wendy refused to speak, there was nothing Kimberly could do to pry it out of her.

Defeated, she offered a few parting words about getting enough rest and finally left.

She hadn't been gone for more than five minutes.

When Willa stormed back into the room.

Her aggressive posture made it explicitly clear that she had just wrung the news out of Kimberly and had come back to interrogate her.

"Wendy, my mom said you have a boyfriend?"

Wendy was busy organizing the premium snacks Winona had given her and didn't even bother to look up.

Knowing that surgeons rarely had time for hot meals, Winona had packed an assortment of incredibly expensive, ready-to-eat bird's nest and fish maw supplements.

Because Kimberly had practically barricaded the mini-fridge, Wendy was pulling out the items that didn't need refrigeration to make space.

Ignored like thin air, Willa's face twisted with fury.

Her expression was incredibly ugly.

She stomped over to the desk, her eyes locking onto the luxurious packaging in Wendy's hands.

Wendy stood up sharply and yanked the duty room door wide open.

Her intention was violently clear.

But Willa hadn't finished her tirade and refused to move.

"What's wrong? You have the guts to do it, but not the guts to own up to it?"

She arched an eyebrow, her gaze sweeping mockingly over the cramped room.

Her high heels clicked sharply against the linoleum as she turned toward the door. Finally, her eyes landed on the brass plaque: Chief Resident On-Call Room.

"The affiliated hospital has the number one heart center in the country. I heard doctors fight to the death over the Chief Resident spot every year."

The position was grueling, but the hospital's rigid promotion system meant it was the only path to becoming an attending physician.

Cardiology was a ferociously competitive department. Given Wendy's age and relatively low seniority, her rapid promotion had always raised eyebrows.

Wendy clearly heard the venomous implication in Willa's voice, but she chose to ignore her.

Willa nodded slowly, a twisted smile forming. "Makes sense. The Sutton Family donates millions of dollars to this hospital every year. Getting you the Chief Resident spot, or even buying you an attending position, is practically a given... Wendy, what the hell are you doing?!"
