My Secret Husband Is My Cold Boss novel Chapter 21

Willa was shoved hard, nearly stumbling out the door.

Wendy leaned casually against the open doorframe.

She was already a few inches taller than Willa, and after that stumble, Willa had to physically look up to meet her eyes.

"I told you to leave. Do you need a map?"

Wendy's expression was icy. "If you want to act like a lunatic, go scream in the hallway."

"Wendy!" Willa trembled with rage.

Not far away, Sophie had just finished changing a patient's dressing and stepped out of a room holding an empty IV bottle.

Hearing the commotion, she hurried over.

"Chief Gates, is everything okay?"

"It's fine."

A video call request popped up on Wendy's phone.

Wendy pointed at Willa and told Sophie, "If she keeps making a scene, just call security."

With that, she ignored whatever colorful expression was on Willa's face and shut the door straight in her face.

She answered the video call.

A girl with sweet dimples instantly filled the screen.

"Babe, I'm back!"

The person on the screen was Wendy's best friend from college, Jade Sterling, a prominent city lawyer—at least, according to herself.

In the video, the bustling international airport stretched out behind Jade.

"You landed?" Wendy asked.

"Yep, yep," Jade nodded eagerly.

Then she let out an "Eh?" and pressed her face closer to the screen to study Wendy.

"Babe, why do you look so unhappy?"

They had been bunkmates in college, so Jade knew the messy dynamics of the Watson family inside and out.

Wendy nodded. "Yeah, nothing escapes Attorney Sterling's sharp eyes."

"My mom and Willa just left."

"Tsk," Jade scoffed.

She didn't even need Wendy to explain. "Let me guess, Willa was spewing her usual garbage."

After graduation, she had stayed in London for the man she loved.

This time, she came back because of a brutal breakup.

"I'm not leaving."

Taking a huge gulp of her hot cocoa, Jade declared, "Chase Sinclair is too difficult to deal with. I've had enough. I'm done serving him."

A ten-year relationship wasn't something you could just drop so easily.

Jade was acting nonchalant and clearly didn't want to dwell on it, so Wendy didn't rub salt in the wound.

They spent a little while catching up and expressing how much they'd missed each other.

Then Jade's gossipy side flared up. "Right, so why was Willa acting crazy today? Don't tell me you and Nelson Sutton actually made some progress?"

Wendy shook her head. "No."

She looked at Jade and confessed, "Jade, there's something I didn't tell you on the phone. I wanted to tell you in person."

Jade nodded. "Uh-huh, tell me."

Wendy: "I got married. Last week."

She hadn't mentioned it over the phone because, at the time, Jade was fresh off her breakup and drowning in the chaos of quitting her job.
