Sampson had arrived before either of them.
He had no intention of eavesdropping.
But he knew opening the heavy fire door would make too much noise and only embarrass Wendy further, so he waited quietly.
"Your massager." Sampson handed the box over to her.
Wendy took it. "Didn't you see my text?"
Sampson patted the pocket of his white coat. "I left my phone in the office."
"Ah," Wendy murmured softly.
She ran her thumb along the edge of the box, her nail pressing a crescent moon into the rigid cardboard.
Her brand-new husband had just witnessed someone confessing to her, which had also exposed her complicated family drama.
"Earlier..."
"Do you need me to step in regarding your family issues?"
They spoke at the same time.
Sampson naturally let Wendy go first.
"That man was Nelson, the grandson of Chairman Sutton from the foundation. Willa, who happens to be my half-sister, has a crush on him."
Wendy knew that someone as sharp as Sampson could easily piece together the whole story from the conversation.
So she had no intention of hiding it.
"Don't worry, there's no romantic entanglement between me and him."
"I know," Sampson nodded.
"Looking at it from an efficiency standpoint, if you had a suitable option right in front of you, there would have been no need for you to go on a blind date."
Wendy felt a sense of deja vu.
Thinking back, this was exactly how she had reasoned it out in her own head when Sampson explained his mother's name on the day they got their marriage license.
The heaviness in her chest instantly dissipated.
Wendy offered a faint smile. "But to be completely honest, I only went on that blind date because of family pressure."
"That doesn't matter." Sampson's gaze flicked to the crescent indentations on the box.
He had no intention of prying further.
