Sophie was preparing for the shift handover and greeted Wendy when she saw her.
"Going to grab breakfast," Wendy made up a random excuse and headed toward the elevators.
Just as she was about to push open the heavy fire doors to the stairwell.
"Dr. Gates."
An elevator dinged, and Nelson stepped out, calling her name.
"Do you have a minute, Dr. Gates?"
Wendy checked the time. It was 7:28.
She asked him, "Is Chairman Sutton here for a follow-up?"
Nelson looked at her. "It's personal."
"Then I apologize, but I..."
He cut off her refusal. "It'll only take three minutes."
"Or if you're busy, I can wait for you."
This clearly wasn't something he was going to drop.
Wendy thought for a moment, pulled her phone from her pocket, and texted Sampson: [I'm going to be ten minutes late.]
Not wanting to fuel any more office rumors about the two of them, she didn't lead Nelson into the main workspace.
Nelson noticed her hesitation. "Should we go down to the cafe?"
It was almost time for the morning shift. The elevators would be packed with colleagues, making that an even worse option.
Wendy hesitated for two seconds. Since she had pushed back her time with Sampson, he wouldn't show up early. So, she pushed open the stairwell door.
The heavy fire door slammed shut behind them with a dull thud.
"Keep it brief, Mr. Sutton."
Nelson looked at Wendy.
Seeing her standing a few feet away, radiating polite distance.
"I'm sorry," Nelson started bluntly. "Did Willa cause trouble for you yesterday?"
Based on the question, Wendy guessed Willa must have lost her temper and gone straight to Nelson after leaving the hospital.
"Mr. Sutton."
Wendy looked up, realizing that his visit today was a confrontation of sorts.
So she didn't beat around the bush either.
