Sampson paused.
All of his experience dealing with women was entirely thanks to his mother.
This was the first time he had ever heard of the placebo effect of chocolate.
A faint smile touched his lips. "I'll keep that in mind for next time."
There were exactly ten senior doctors in the cardiology department.
Sampson had four on-call shifts a month. Calculated out, it meant the two of them would see each other exactly once a week.
"About the houses," Sampson said. "When you have some free time, take a look and decide which one you want to live in."
Wendy choked on her soy latte and started coughing violently.
Sampson looked over. "What's wrong?"
Wendy shook her head, refusing to speak. There was no way she was going to admit that in that split second, her brain had flashed to Jade's dirty joke about him hinting at their marital life.
Wendy asked, "I still have a month before my term as Chief Resident ends. Isn't it a bit early?"
Sampson replied, "I need to have a cleaner go in and prep the place. It's better to decide early."
That made sense. Wendy nodded. "I'll think about it and let you know next time we see each other."
"Alright." Sampson nodded.
Halfway through their food, Wendy's duty phone rang.
It was the patient in bed eight complaining of full-body pain. The doctor on duty had checked on him, but the family was being incredibly difficult and demanded a different doctor. Left with no choice, they called Wendy for backup.
"Just head home and rest after you finish eating. You don't need to wait for me."
It was standard post-operative pain. Wendy spent half an hour explaining it to the family before they finally, reluctantly, accepted it.
When she returned, the breakroom door was closed.
Sampson was gone.
The desk was perfectly neat and spotless. Before leaving, he had reorganized it for her again.
Everything was arranged in the exact same immaculate pattern as last time.
Wendy stared at it for a few seconds, pulled out her phone, snapped a picture, and sent it to Jade.
Wendy: [Director Sanders apparently wasn't satisfied with how I organized my desk and rearranged the whole thing for me again.]
Jade: [Hahahahahaha!]

It was Riley's turn to be on duty this Sunday.
After finishing her rounds, she walked back into the main office and found Wendy typing away at her computer.
"What are you working on, Chief Gates?"
"End-of-term report."
She had to give a presentation when her Chief Resident term ended.
Wendy hated leaving things to the last minute, so she was prepping early.
