Right on cue, Riley walked out of a patient's room.
Gossip was always better with a crowd, so Sophie waved Riley over.
She answered Wendy's question: "Yeah, word around cardiothoracic is that Director Sanders has a girlfriend."
"What?"
Riley had just walked over and was immediately hit with this explosive news.
Her neck went stiff as she turned her head, wanting to look at Wendy but too afraid to.
She finally swallowed hard and asked Sophie, "Director Sanders is dating someone? Who?"
Sophie let out a dramatic sigh and gave Riley a look that said *you should know this*. "You're Bed 16's primary doctor! How are you so out of the loop?"
"Who else could it be?"
"Dr. Sawyer from neurosurgery, obviously!"
Not Wendy. Riley let out a massive sigh of relief.
But before she even finished exhaling, she realized something was off and shrieked, "Who told you he's dating Dr. Sawyer?!"
Sophie had no idea why Riley was overreacting like this.
Giving her a weird look, Sophie pulled out her phone and scrolled through a week's worth of chat logs for Wendy and Riley to see.
"Look, I've got primary sources."
"The girls in cardiothoracic said that during his last two second-line shifts, Director Sanders disappeared from his office for half an hour each time."
Riley shot Wendy a sideways glance.
"People leave their offices! Do you not use the bathroom?"
Sophie gave Riley a look. "For half an hour?"
Riley stood her ground. "Maybe the director has constipation issues?"
Sophie was speechless.
She then presented her next piece of evidence.
"What about the fact that he took a dessert a few days ago, but no one saw him eat it?"
Riley countered, "He's a grown man, maybe he's embarrassed to eat sweets in public and ate it behind closed doors."
Sophie shot back, "Wrong!"
"The nurses in neurosurgery said that, coincidentally, a slice of brown sugar cake was sitting on Dr. Sawyer's desk the very next morning!"
"A coincidence," Riley scoffed.
"It's the same cake. If you guys can buy it, why can't Dr. Sawyer?"
After Riley's defense, Sophie went quiet.
Meanwhile.
Over at the cardiothoracic nurses' station, two evening-shift nurses were also on the verge of passing out.
But out of pure excitement.
"Tammy, look! Dr. Sawyer is here to see the director again."
"She didn't even bring a patient file this time! She's not even pretending anymore!"
"When do you think the director is going to make it official with her?"
"You've got it backward. The question is when Dr. Sawyer will make it official with *him*."
The other nurse looked confused.
The first nurse explained, "Think about it. No matter how brilliant the director is, all his prestige comes from overseas."
"In this hospital's political climate, if you don't have connections and resources, moving up is impossible!"
"But if he gets together with Dr. Sawyer, that changes everything! With his skills and Director Sawyer's backing..."
The nurse grinned like a proud matchmaker and clapped her hands. "That's what I call a power couple!"
"What power couple?"
Sampson's voice suddenly rang out right behind them.
