My Secret Husband Is My Cold Boss novel Chapter 47

The two nurses practically jumped out of their skin. "...Director."

"What are we talking about?" Sampson offered a warm smile.

The nurses exchanged a panicked look and shook their heads rapidly. "N-nothing."

Sampson didn't press the issue and walked away.

Once he was gone, the nurses let out a massive sigh of relief. "We should've just gossiped in the group chat."

"It's fine. Did you see his attitude? If anything, we can put in a good word for him with Dr. Sawyer tomorrow..."

"Is Dr. Sawyer close with the nurses?"

Being called in by a late-night phone call from his boss, Leo Lawrence had thought he'd slept through an emergency consultation and that a patient had died because of him. He was ready to go to jail.

It turned out Sampson just wanted to ask about Dr. Sawyer.

Leo's blood pressure had spiked to 160 for nothing.

Unsure of what Sampson was getting at, Leo answered carefully, "I think they're pretty friendly."

Leo thought to himself, *Anyone with eyes can see she's into you. Don't tell me you haven't noticed.*

But Sampson genuinely hadn't.

His next question was: "So Dr. Sawyer's frequent visits to cardiothoracic these past few days haven't been for Bed 16?"

"Come on, Director..." Leo almost laughed out loud.

"Bed 16 is in the ICU. If Dr. Sawyer were checking on him, she'd be running to the ICU."

I see.

Sampson fell silent for a few seconds.

Recalling Wendy's question about Quinn Sawyer earlier, he nodded and stood up.

"Alright, I understand."

"Close the door on your way out."

Wendy had just fallen asleep when Sampson's knock woke her up.

Still groggy, she instinctively checked the time, assuming she was so exhausted she'd done something stupid like forget he was on call again, confusing a dream of eating with him for reality.

He reminded her, "We are married. Whether you trust me is up to you, but explaining the situation is my responsibility."

Wendy replied, "Then explain."

Her swift shift in attitude took him by surprise.

Recovering, he let out a low laugh. "Quinn Sawyer and I went to Harvard together. We're not close; we've only crossed paths at a few alumni events."

"After I operated on Bed 16, I handed the case over to Dr. Zachary. I assumed she was coming to cardiothoracic every day out of concern for the patient."

"I'll handle this."

How he handled it was his own business.

Unless he was actually involved with someone else, Wendy wouldn't pry.

She was just a little curious. "Did you really not pick up on her interest at all?"

Sampson chuckled at that. "I don't think I'm quite that arrogant."

Interacting with female colleagues was a normal part of the job. Assuming every woman was harboring secret feelings for him would be disrespectful to them.
