My Secret Husband Is My Cold Boss novel Chapter 51

Jade asked Wendy, "Don't you think Sampson letting you take the master bedroom, but adding the word 'temporarily,' is exactly what the doctor ordered for you?"

"What the doctor ordered?" Wendy chuckled at her friend's phrasing.

On the other end of the video call, the more Jade thought about it, the more convinced she became that her best friend had hit the jackpot with this marriage.

She declared, "That husband of yours is definitely a gentleman on the surface, but deeply dominant underneath."

"And honestly," Jade continued, "with your tendency to overthink everything and your lack of security, you need exactly that kind of man."

"How does the saying go? An anxious heart needs a lover who refuses to leave."

"Besides, our Dr. Gates is clearly the superior catch."

Superior? Wendy felt her friend was looking through some seriously rose-colored glasses.

Jade scoffed, completely disagreeing. "I'm not exaggerating!"

"Think about it. You and Sampson work at the same top-tier hospital. Other people got there on luxury cruise ships, while you paddled your way up in a tiny canoe. Shouldn't you be proud of yourself?"

Wendy's mood always lifted after a chat with Jade.

"I think the luckiest thing that ever happened to me was finding a friend as fiercely supportive as you," Wendy smiled.

Perhaps Jade's comforting words had worked their magic, or maybe her body was just profoundly exhausted, but by the time Wendy woke up, the sky outside was pitch black.

She hadn't drawn the curtains, and the city lights filtered through the glass, casting shadows across the headboard.

She sat up, taking a solid half-hour to shake off the grogginess, before finally pushing her bedroom door open.

The living room lights were on. Sampson was already home, sitting on the sofa and reviewing some documents.

Seeing her emerge, he paused, looking up. "Did you skip lunch?"

"I just woke up."

Wendy glanced toward the dining area, noting the empty table.

His seminar couldn't possibly have lasted into the night.

He had been waiting for her to eat.

Finally alert, she asked, "Have you not eaten either? I can order some takeout."

Sampson stood up, unbuttoning his cuffs as he walked toward the kitchen. "Work has been draining lately. Let's make something healthy at home."

He stopped in front of the refrigerator and glanced back. "Anything in particular you're craving?"

He took the left cabinets, while she scoured the right.

Less frequently used items were usually stashed up high. Relying on logic, Wendy checked the top cabinets and finally spotted the elusive pot on the highest shelf.

She got on her tiptoes, reaching up to grab it.

Suddenly, a warm presence bracketed her shoulders from behind.

Sampson gently caught her arm, moving her safely aside. "Call me next time you can't reach."

With effortless ease, he retrieved the heavy pot from the top shelf.

With the broth simmering on the stove, it was time to prep the ingredients.

The fridge was stocked with pre-washed organic vegetables ready to eat, but knowing his preference for cleanliness, Wendy took the time to rinse everything again.

She washed the potatoes and yams, setting them aside to be chopped.

Sampson took the strainer from her hands. "Do these need slicing?"

"I'll cut them once I'm done washing," she replied.
