Just as she started toward the rooms, she stopped in front of the open doors. She suddenly realized a very critical detail: "Which room am I sleeping in?"
Sampson paused mid-motion as he rinsed a glass and looked over.
The moment their eyes met, Wendy's heart leaped into her throat.
"...Are we sleeping in the same bed?" she added hesitantly.
"Hmm?"
Sampson let out a soft chuckle.
He walked closer, holding the glass. With his light-colored eyes half-lidded, his gaze inexplicably sent a chill down her spine.
He handed the water to her.
Looking right into her eyes, Sampson asked, "Am I remembering incorrectly? Did we agree to a fake marriage when we first met?"
"No."
Wendy held his gaze and shook her head. "I thought you said you didn't like a clingy partner..."
"It seems you've taken that to heart far better than I have," Sampson interrupted, correcting her misconception.
"Wendy, I don't want a clingy wife."
"But I also told you that this is a real marriage. We aren't playing house."
"You take the master bedroom."
"The hospital is too busy right now, so I'll sleep in the study for the time being."
"But only for now."

Given the nature of her job, Wendy didn't consider herself a highly sensitive person.
But lying in a strange bed, she struggled to fall asleep.
After tossing and turning for half an hour, she FaceTimed Jade.
Jade was working overtime at her law firm.
Seeing Wendy's new background, she immediately connected the dots. "Babe, did you move in today?!"
"Yeah," Wendy nodded.
Jade's face lit up with excitement. The look in her eyes suggested she wanted to climb through the screen to investigate.
"On such a tense, thrilling moving day, you're not busy getting hot and heavy with him, but you have time to call me?"
"Besides, didn't you say his parents are deeply in love?"
"People are a product of their environment. He might claim he doesn't want a clingy wife, but that's just him talking tough! Coming from a family like that, there's no way he'd tolerate being in a miserable marriage!"
Wendy stayed silent, looking down as she chewed on the thought. It made sense.
"Actually, I never wanted a fake marriage either."
When she went on that blind date with Silas Sanders, she had genuinely wanted to take things slow and build a real connection.
Jade didn't need her to finish, flawlessly picking up the thread. "Ugh, I know exactly what you're thinking. You got married, suddenly realized there's a huge gap between you and Sampson, and now you're feeling a little insecure."
Best friends for years—they didn't need to spell everything out.
Wendy hesitated, then nodded.
There wasn't much in her life that she could actually control. Her family of origin, how she grew up... those were entirely out of her hands.
Even her marriage, which she had thought would be on equal footing, had turned out to be anything but.
With no solid ground beneath her, she always felt the need to have an exit strategy ready for any choice she made.
That was the lesson her past had hammered into her.
"Then it's time to learn a new lesson."
