Wendy gritted her teeth. "Sampson Sanders."
"Who?!" Dr. Franklin's blood pressure, which had just stabilized, hit a brand new peak.
This wasn't just anger anymore.
"Sampson Sanders from Cardiothoracic?" For a second, he thought his ears were failing him.
When Wendy nodded in confirmation, he fell silent.
Up until the very end, Dr. Franklin didn't say another word.
He just waved his hand, signaling Wendy to leave so he could cool off.

After finishing a bypass surgery, Sampson walked out of the OR right at the end of his shift.
He had barely changed into his street clothes when Dr. Franklin cornered him at the door.
"Busy?"
Between their two departments, Sampson usually only interacted with the Chief Residents. His relationship with Dr. Franklin was strictly professional, built on mutual respect.
But since the older man had sought him out, there was clearly a reason.
"Not at all. Did you need something, Dr. Franklin?" Sampson asked politely.
"Private matter. Let's talk in my office."
That evening, the hospital staff watched in awe as the heads of Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery walked into an office looking intensely serious and whispered behind closed doors for half an hour.
Rumors immediately started flying. Everyone speculated that a high-profile VIP patient was being transferred in—someone so important it required both directors to personally debate the surgical plan.
Wendy had a surgery scheduled that day.
She didn't get off the table until eight o'clock.
Before heading in, she had texted Sampson, telling him not to wait up.
But when she changed out of her scrubs and checked her phone.
There was a message from him, sent half an hour ago, saying he was in the parking garage.
There was also another text, this one from Kimberly.
Kimberly: [Wendy, bring your boyfriend over this Sunday. Wyatt's girlfriend is coming for dinner too. Let's have a family reunion.]
She had been legally married for a while now. It was probably time to tell her mother.
Wendy locked her screen.
She got into the car.
Sampson was in the driver's seat, resting his eyes.
Wendy didn't think much of it and asked, "Did you have to work late today too?"
"I covered a shift for Cardiology."
Sampson's lips curved into a faint smile.
"Dr. Franklin called me into his office."
Politeness came from distance.
Wendy obviously understood that.
She also knew she had missed the perfect window to bring it up.
Wendy: [I just couldn't say it.]
The Sanders family was so warm and loving.
So loving that her first instinct when stepping into their world was deep insecurity.
The day Sampson brought her home for dinner, Winona and her husband had dressed to the nines and showered her with gifts.
But if she brought Sampson to the Watson house, Willa would definitely give her attitude, or worse, cause a massive scene. What would Sampson think then?
Wendy didn't want him to see that ugly side of her life yet.
So she was agonizing over it.
The one who bore the consequences had to make the decision. Jade couldn't help her with this.
Her best friend's attention had already shifted to something else: [Babe, aside from stressing over this, haven't you noticed something else?]
Wendy was clueless: [?]
Jade pointed it out: [You're starting to care about what Sampson thinks!]
[Babe! You're falling in love!]
