My Secret Husband Is My Cold Boss novel Chapter 72

Jade scoffed. "Even my elementary school cousin knows how to steal a kiss from a girl. Holding hands is for kids."

Wendy chuckled. "Then all that's left is working together."

Last night, they had arrived home early.

Wendy had originally planned to hit the gym after dinner.

"You can work out at home," Sampson had reminded her. "Besides, you just soaked in the hot springs. It's not a good idea to exercise today."

With working out off the table, studying was the only option left.

Since moving her laptop and papers into the study, she had worked late for two days straight. Today was her first time actually using the space.

The five-foot desk was more than large enough for both of them.

Sampson's side was piled high with specialized medical volumes.

Wendy took one look and realized she couldn't understand a word of them.

She lowered her head and started revising her own paper.

As she worked, she noticed something. "Did you organize my loose-leaf binder in order?"

"Is it out of sequence?" Sampson asked.

Wendy shook her head. The fact that it wasn't messed up was exactly what felt so unfair.

It meant she couldn't comprehend his literature, but he could easily understand hers.

"Is the gap between us really that huge?" she couldn't help but ask.

Academically speaking, she was top-tier, having fought her way to the peak among thousands of brilliant peers.

Was this the moment hard work finally bowed to sheer talent?

"It has nothing to do with that."

Sampson chuckled. "Transitioning from cardiothoracic surgery to cardiology is naturally easy. But have you ever heard of someone going from internal medicine to surgery?"

As medical fields became hyper-specialized, each discipline required deep, exclusive focus.

Surgeons had a more hands-on mastery of human anatomy, making the shift to internal medicine smoother.

That made Wendy feel a little better.

When the new week began, they both returned to their respective battlefields.

Nelson's little stunt yesterday served as a wake-up call for her.

Dr. Laird Franklin had been her mentor since grad school. Although her marriage to Sampson was incredibly rushed, it felt wrong to hide it from the man who treated her like a daughter.

As her mentor, he knew a bit about her family background.

And that family of hers was absolutely unreliable!

He huffed, his chest tightening with phantom angina.

He had spent years molding this brilliant protégé, only for her to veer off the path and rush into marriage!

Right when she was up for her Attending promotion, no less!

If she couldn't perform surgeries, her career path was over.

Did she endure an entire grueling year as Chief Resident for nothing?

Dr. Franklin was panting with rage.

Seeing his extreme reaction, Wendy panicked. She hurriedly poured him a cup of hot tea to soothe him.

Once he finally calmed down, she spoke.

"Dr. Franklin, he works at our hospital. We're keeping the marriage quiet for now."

He slammed his hand on the desk in agitation. "Kept quiet? He poached my student! Being in the same hospital just makes it easier for me to go break his legs! Out with it! What's his name? Which department?"
