My Secret Husband Is My Cold Boss novel Chapter 87

The call was from the newly appointed Chief Resident, Dr. Sullivan.

His mother had suffered a severe fall, and he needed to rush back to his hometown immediately.

Dr. Franklin had already approved the emergency leave.

But the duties of the Chief Resident needed to be covered for the next two days.

Wendy, having just stepped down from the role, was the obvious choice.

Without hesitation, Wendy threw on her scrubs and headed straight to the hospital.

After taking the pager and getting a briefing on the patients, it felt exactly like it had a few months ago.

There was only one emergency admission during the night.

Wendy managed to sleep with her head on her desk for a few hours in the early morning.

When the sun came up, she sent Winona a text, figuring it was early enough that she might not be awake yet.

Wendy: [Mom, a colleague had an emergency and I had to cover their shift. I won't be able to make it to dinner today.]

Winona called back almost immediately.

Winona asked, "You're covering a shift? So you don't have time this afternoon either?"

Wendy confirmed she didn't.

Winona sighed in disappointment. "I cooked so much delicious food."

She paused, then asked, "What if I bring it to the hospital for you?"

The Sanders estate was quite a distance away. It was too much trouble just for one meal.

Wendy replied, "Mom, please don't go through all that trouble. I'll visit when I get some free time."

"What trouble?" Winona argued gently. "Seeing the person you want to see is pure happiness."

She continued, "You have no idea, I've wanted to visit you at the hospital for ages, but Sampson kept stopping me. He said I'd distract you from your work."

"But today's a Sunday, so it shouldn't be too distracting, right?"

Her upward inflection and persuasive tone sounded exactly like Sampson when he casually insisted he was the one who wanted the breakfast sandwich the other morning.

Wendy let out a soft laugh. "It's no distraction at all. Come whenever you'd like."

Scheduled procedures were rare on Sundays, but the ER was always unpredictable.

Calculating Winona's arrival time, Wendy headed toward the parking garage to meet her.

As she waited for the elevator, a call came from the ER, requesting her immediately.

A patient's care couldn't wait. Wendy had no choice but to start walking toward the ER while calling Winona to explain which floor her office was on and asking her to wait.

"You go do what you need to do," Winona said. "It's my first time here, I'd love to look around anyway."

Winona had been carrying the large insulated bag for a while.

Wendy led her into the doctors' lounge.

Six of the doctors were running outpatient clinics that day, and they were all currently resting in the lounge on their lunch break.

Seeing Wendy walk in with someone, they politely greeted her. "Chief Gates, family dropping off food again?"

Winona nodded. "Yes, hello everyone."

"She's my mother-in-law."

They answered at the exact same time.

Winona had fully prepared herself to just say she was a family friend, so hearing Wendy openly introduce her as her mother-in-law made her eyes widen in shock.

With trembling hands, she pulled her phone out of her pocket and frantically started typing.

The first text went to her driver: [Cake, fruit, coffee! Buy enough for the entire department! Get it here immediately!]

The next text went to her husband, Stanley: [Oh my god, honey! Do you know how Wendy just introduced me?!]

[She called me her mother-in-law!]

[I've never felt so honored!]
