[You have no idea! The entire wall is filled with thirty-something male doctors, and then there's my daughter-in-law—young, brilliant, and gorgeous!]
...
Her manicured nails clicked furiously against the screen.
Winona fired off a rapid barrage of excited messages.
Stanley replied: [Calm down for a second, don't accidentally slip up and ruin it for the girl.]
He was referring to her relationship with Sampson.
Winona: [Never!]
Closing her chat with her husband, Winona's racing heart finally settled a little.
She realized she should probably update Sampson as well.
Too lazy to retype it all, she just forwarded screenshots of her conversation with Stanley to him.
Sampson saw the messages and immediately called her.
Winona decisively hit decline!
Winona: [Text me! I'm in the cardiology lounge.]
Sampson: [Mom, I told you not to go to the hospital.]
Winona: [I'm not bothering anyone. Wendy told me I could come.]
Sampson: [She was just being polite.]
Winona: [Don't project your own flaws onto her. Don't measure our mother-in-law-daughter relationship by the way she treats you.]
Sampson: [Ha!]
Winona: [Excuse me? You sounding all flustered just proves you're jealous of me!]
The moment her message sent, Wendy's phone buzzed in her pocket.
As Wendy reached for it, Winona firmly grabbed her hand. "Eat first, don't waste time on irrelevant people."
The gourmet slow-roasted short ribs in the container had been simmering since the night before.
As soon as the lid popped off, the mouthwatering aroma filled the entire office.
Winona sat down and ate with everyone.
Without an ounce of snobbery, she happily chatted with the other doctors.
She barely ate a bite herself, constantly picking out the best pieces of meat and placing them into Wendy's bowl.
Every word out of her mouth was nothing but absolute praise for Wendy.
Last week, half the department had overheard Kimberly screaming at Wendy in her office.
No one said anything out loud, but secretly, everyone had been dying to know what kind of "failure" had managed to win over Chief Gates.
Well, judging by the family dynamic, it made sense.
He pivoted, trying a slightly more direct approach. "And there's been talk around the department that Wendy's husband is just starting out in his career."
What a diplomatic way to phrase 'struggling.'
Wendy's eye twitched slightly.
Dr. Franklin obviously knew that 'Wendy's husband' was Sampson.
He was doing this for two reasons: to subtly put the in-laws in their place, and because he knew half the floor had heard Kimberly's tirade the other day.
People were bound to gossip.
Dr. Franklin was trying to hand Winona the perfect opportunity to clear Sampson's name on the record.
He wasn't doing it for Sampson's sake.
He was doing it to protect Wendy's reputation.
Winona nodded sagely, looking entirely sympathetic. "Yes, exactly, exactly. He's only been at his new job for two months. It's nothing worth bragging about."
Wait, what? Dr. Franklin was utterly bewildered. This was Sampson's own mother.
Winona slapped her thigh. "I'm telling you, my son is useless at his job and has zero social skills! I have no idea how he managed to land someone as incredible as Wendy!"
"..."
Well, that completely shut Dr. Franklin down.
