My Secret Husband Is My Cold Boss novel Chapter 90

Victor Vance was on the night shift.

When the time came, he headed straight to the doctors' on-call room to catch some sleep.

Wendy remained alone in the main office.

Across the courtyard, the lights in the inpatient building were still on, glowing brightly before the mandated lights-out time.

In the years since joining the hospital, Wendy had seen this exact view during every night shift.

The same building, the same sterile lights, only the patients constantly cycling through the beds changed.

Home was in the southwest direction, blocked by the surrounding buildings, but Wendy knew exactly where it was.

-

The next day.

During the lunch break, Dr. Franklin called Wendy into his office.

He had to run an outpatient clinic at the branch campus that afternoon, so pressed for time, he cut straight to the chase.

"How's your promotion pitch coming along?"

The hospital's annual review and promotion period was firmly set right after the new year.

This year, the holidays were early.

Dr. Franklin wanted Wendy to have all her materials finalized ahead of time, just in case.

The process to become an Attending Physician had four stages.

The first was qualifications: candidates had to pass the medical board exams and secure their intermediate certifications.

Wendy had cleared those requirements last year.

The second phase was the departmental recommendation.

Candidates had to present their tenure review to the department head, after which a core committee would score and vote on their performance.

Dr. Franklin said, "Things will be slow next week. Use the time to prep your promotion pitch."

Once the presentation was cleared, the department would submit her packet to HR, and she'd just have to wait for the final exams and board review after the new year.

Given Wendy's clinical volume and publication record, Dr. Franklin had zero concerns about her getting the promotion.

He only called her in to offer a quick reminder: "Make sure you're fully prepared."

"I will be, Dr. Franklin."

Riding high on the good news, Wendy immediately called Jade after work to celebrate.

Jade was thrilled. "This is massive! I'm taking you out to an expensive dinner!"

But because she was on the line with Jade, the call hadn't gone through.

A lone 'line busy' notification sat silently at the bottom of the chat.

"What's wrong?" Hearing nothing but silence, Jade asked.

Wendy paused. "Um... Babe, go take a shower. I need to call Sampson back."

Jade had assumed the call during their pub dinner was a one-off.

Hearing this, she realized they were video calling every single day!

Jade let out a delighted, knowing laugh. "Wow, I didn't realize things were heating up so fast between you two."

She called them "you two" because they had only been legally married for three months.

Jade added, "Babe, a marriage of convenience turning real was practically made for you!"

"Who needs a messy romance? Just skip straight to the legally bound, fully committed stage!"

Wendy finally managed to coax Jade off the phone.

But Jade's last comment had struck right at the core of exactly how she felt.

That was precisely why she had decided to dive into a flash marriage in the first place.
