My Secret Husband Is My Cold Boss novel Chapter 91

The truth was, she simply didn't want to start a relationship with an uncertain outcome.

Wendy Gates initiated a video call to Sampson Sanders.

It rang for quite a while before he finally answered.

Sampson appeared on the screen wearing a crisp bathrobe.

Perhaps he had rushed to grab the phone, as his hair was still dripping wet.

The robe hung loosely around his frame, the parted collar offering a generous view of his broad, sculpted chest.

Water droplets slid down his temple, tracing the line of his throat and trailing over his chest before disappearing beneath the fabric.

Good lord.

Was this really something she should be looking at this late at night?

Wendy froze.

She immediately averted her gaze. "You—you finish washing up first. Just call me back when you're done."

Noticing she was about to hang up, Sampson quickly stopped her. "I'm already done."

A brief rustling sound came through the speaker.

In her peripheral vision, Wendy saw Sampson step out of the frame.

When he returned, he was fully dressed in a set of comfortable pajamas.

Wendy felt significantly more at ease.

She rubbed her nose to ease the awkwardness. "I didn't realize you were in the shower."

Sampson lifted his gaze, glancing at the screen. "I tried calling you earlier, but the line was busy, so I decided to wash up first."

Wendy hummed in acknowledgment and explained, "I was on the phone with Jade."

"I figured."

Sampson leaned against the headboard, giving a slight nod.

Dressed in loungewear, he radiated a soft, approachable warmth.

Sampson said, "I'm flying back tomorrow. My flight lands at seven, so I should be home before ten."

Perfect timing.

Wendy replied, "I have surgery tomorrow evening, so I'll be finishing up around the same time. I'll wait for you so we can grab a late dinner together."

"Sounds good," Sampson agreed.

Wendy then asked, "Is there anything specific you want to eat?"

Wendy meticulously picked the diced onions out of the pan one by one.

Once it was fully cooked, she added the broth and brought it to a simmer.

The other burner was even simpler.

She scrambled the eggs, set them aside, simmered the tomatoes into a rich bolognese sauce, and tossed everything together with the pasta.

Timing the drive from the airport perfectly, Wendy moved at an unhurried, steady pace.

So when Sampson walked through the door, the first thing he saw was Wendy effortlessly managing both stovetops at once.

Sitting on a plane for hours in formal wear was exhausting.

Sampson took off his suit jacket and draped it over his arm.

Instead of immediately washing his hands, he strolled over to the kitchen doorway and stood there, quietly observing her.

"...Is everything okay?" Completely baffled by his stare, Wendy stopped stirring.

"Everything's fine."

Sampson shifted his gaze from the stove to her face, a smile touching his lips as he loosened his tie.

"I was just thinking that with your flawless ability to juggle two pans at once, running two operating rooms simultaneously in a few years will be an absolute breeze for you."
