My Secret Husband Is My Cold Boss novel Chapter 97

Sampson said simply, "Cancel his appointment and refund his copay."

...

Wendy didn't know how to respond to that for a second.

Crossing his arms, Sampson leaned casually against the edge of the desk. "Wasn't it clearly marked as a Teaching Clinic when he registered?"

"Yes, it was." Wendy nodded.

Not only was it clearly marked, but the consultation fee was half the price of a regular visit.

Sampson inclined his head. "Then there's your answer."

"Rules are rules."

"Everyone knows how hard it is to get an appointment with an attending."

"Since they actively chose to book the Teaching Clinic, they implicitly agreed to the hospital's protocol."

"If you bend the rules for him today, another patient will try the exact same stunt tomorrow."

"Then anyone who can't score an expert appointment will just book the Teaching Clinic and throw a tantrum until they get what they want."

It made perfect logical sense.

But...

Wendy looked up at Sampson, gently reminding him, "Please don't ever say patients are throwing a tantrum out loud in the hospital."

"The medical environment here is very different from the States."

"Doctor-patient relations are incredibly tense right now."

Sampson gave her a look that clearly said, 'Who cares?' "Then cancel their registration anyway."

Wendy: "..."

She lowered her head, taking half a minute to fully digest Sampson's aggressive yet effective strategy.

"Don't worry," Sampson added.

"As long as you remain professional, Hospital Administration won't give you any trouble."

After all, the hospital had no policy forbidding doctors from refunding difficult patients.

Sampson continued, "And I guarantee you, the moment you offer to cancel his appointment, he'll stop yelling instantly."

"When faced with a choice, people instinctively choose the option that minimizes their own loss."

They finally made it past the brutal New Year's rush.

Wendy was on the night shift again.

The resident's lounge reeked of stale cigarette smoke, so she opted out of sleeping there, preparing to crash on the couch in her office as usual.

Just as she lay down, her phone buzzed.

Sampson: [Come down to the parking garage.]

Wendy shut the car door.

Seeing the takeout bags resting on the passenger seat, she asked in surprise, "You're not going home?"

"I'm on-call backup tonight."

The surgical load was immense, and he finally had a moment to breathe. Sampson closed his eyes and massaged his temples. A stray lock of his normally immaculate hair fell over his forehead.

His voice was raspy. "If I go home, I'll just get dragged back here in the middle of the night anyway. I'm sleeping at the hospital."

He had previously mentioned that he never slept at the hospital unless it was absolutely necessary.

Wendy cast a subtle glance toward the driver's seat.
