"Eat first."
Sampson opened his eyes abruptly, catching Wendy staring at him.
"Aren't you hungry?"
At the upward lilt of his tone, Wendy paused. For some inexplicable reason, it felt like Sampson was suddenly in a remarkably good mood.
"I am."
Inside the quiet, enclosed space of the car, the only sound was the soft rustle of Wendy eating.
Sampson had bought burgers.
They were easy to eat and incredibly filling.
Once Wendy finished, she neatly folded the wrappers back into the paper bag and checked the time. "I should probably head up to finish my shift."
The sapphire blue dial of her watch glinted faintly in the dim lighting of the car.
Sampson cast a casual glance at it and nodded. "Alright. Call me if anything happens."
She had been doing night shifts for years; what could possibly happen?
Wendy shot Sampson a pointed look. "Let's hope nothing happens... Don't jinx it, Dr. Sanders!"
Unless a critical patient came in requiring a joint consultation from both Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery, she couldn't think of a single reason to call Sampson.
And if that actually happened, she wouldn't be getting any sleep tonight anyway.
Hearing her superstition, Sampson understood perfectly.
"I'll go knock on wood when I get to my office."
"Perfect," Wendy nodded in satisfaction, reaching for the door handle.
Just as she pushed it open—
The next second, the car door slammed shut with a heavy thud.
Wendy sank back into the passenger seat.
"Hmm?"
Sampson glanced at Wendy, noticing she was staring out the window, and followed her line of sight.
Parked two or three spots away, a young man and woman had just stepped out of their car.
Wyatt took a deep breath, the irritation clearly etched across his face.
"Willa, can you just drop it?"
It was the first time in their lives the siblings had genuinely turned on each other.
Willa let out a bitter laugh. "Drop what? You're the one who's been throwing a fit for the past two weeks!"
Wyatt looked at her and slowly shook his head.
His reaction reeked of sheer exasperation and disbelief. "Willa, do you ever stop and think about why I'm mad at you?"
"What else could it be!" Willa felt entirely justified, her voice shrill and confident. "It's because I chased Wendy away on Mom's birthday, and you didn't get to stare at her all night!"
Wendy's pulse spiked. She instinctively glanced at Sampson through the rearview mirror.
Wyatt let out a cold laugh, clearly furious.
"Is that really what you think? You still don't believe you did anything wrong, do you!"
Giving up on the hope that Willa would figure it out herself, Wyatt said coldly, "At Kimberly's birthday, Wendy brought her husband over, and you said those vile things to her. Don't you realize you completely humiliated Kimberly in front of everyone?"
"Mom didn't even care, yet here you are holding a grudge over it," Willa scoffed.
