My Stepsister Returned To Rewrite Fate But I Became Luna (Chloe) novel Chapter 149

Kapitel 149

Chloe’s POV

The queen was adamant in her stance, refusing to be intimidated by Darius.

“I am the queen of this kingdom. I am within my right to monitor individuals and situations that I believe would pose a threat to the crown.”

“And that includes my daughter?” the king asked with a perfectly quirked brow. His tone was level like he was trying not to be angry at her.

I did not care for their theatrics. I simply wanted to know my fate and, if they decided on no punishment, to get out of here.

The couple glared at each other intensely.

“Permit me, your Majesty, but I have not had time to adjust to the situation,” the queen spat. “If she is supposed to be princess, the least I can do is learn of her personality. She would not be the first to attempt to leech off the crown-”

“Mother!” Liam cried but she turned to him with a glare.

I thought he was going to back down again but he stood his ground this time. “Have you not done enough?” he said. “Chloe has already said she does not want to be a member of this family.”

His mother interjected, her tone dripping with sarcasm. “Your father wants to be desperately reunited with his daughter. I am the queen, expected to be magnanimous and accept his bastards-”

“Do not act like you still don’t give Camilla shit for insisting on being welcomed into the family,” Liam snapped, cutting her words shut.

Both women sucked in sharp gasps, the queen’s perfect mask faltering for a moment.

Liam sighed and turned around, looking physically uncomfortable with the thought of hurting his

mother.

“No one is asking you to treat them like your own daughters,” he continued, his tone calmer. “It would be unfair to require that of you…”

His gaze met mine and he looked away instantly. “But can you not torture them for something that isn’t their fault? They did not ask to be born. Direct your ire to the source of this mayhem.”

Silence stretched in the room for a full minute then the queen stood and turned out of the room, marching out through a side door.

Camilla started to cry silently, disappearing through another door near the back. The king could not bear to look me in the eyes.

Liam finally turned to us with a warm, apologetic smile. He stared at me until his eyes started to water.

“I am so sorry. So sorry for what just happened,” he whispered. “I will not ask you to forgive us or acknowledge me as your brother. Just…keep treating me as Liam from camp. I will be fine with that.”

Before he could leave, I stopped him with a question. “How long did you know?” I asked, already certain

my answer but needing to hear it from him anyway.

He did not say anything for long enough that I thought he was not going to reply.

“Since the day we met.” He chuckled. “You looked so much like my father that it made me upset. Then, I heard you talking and realized that you were nothing like those other spoiled Alpha and Beta princesses.”

His gaze shifted to Axel and then backed to me. “Sometimes, I wished you were not my sister.”

Without clarifying what he meant, he turned and left the throne room. I replayed his words in my head over and over, trying to give it different meanings but I knew what he meant.

I was not so much a fool not to realize the way Liam had spoken to me and treated me back at camp and

even now.

Axel did not get upset. He simply wrapped an arm around my waist and led me out of the throne room. Come on.”

As I stepped out of the doors, my knees buckled. Axel easily caught me and lifted me into his arms, carrying me out of the doors.

I held onto his shirt, forcing myself to breathe and take my mind away from all that had just happened.

Just as I thought everything was over, the moment we left the palace, it was a new kind of trouble.

The Alpha and Luna heirs had gravitated towards the palace gates and were hanging around.

Far enough that no one would call them out on their snooping but close enough that it was clear that they were here to snoop.

Axel moved through them, heading to the guest house with confidence. But I could feel their gazes on me, picking me apart, analyzing every detail.

Ordinarily, in a situation like this, I would raise my head high and not care what they had to say.

But right now, I was emotionally exhausted and simply let Axel and Darius do the heavy lifting. I was sure that Darius would figure out the narrative that he would spread about what happened inside.

Axel set me down on our bed and without a word, climbed in after me. His presence enveloped me with so much warmth that I started to cry again.

“Baby,” he whispered, pressing his lips to my forehead. “I’m here.”

He was being soft, wanting me to rest but right now, I needed a distraction. A very good one.

I swung a leg over his body and straddled him. Axel’s eyes widened slightly and he tried to sit up but I

shoved him back down.

“What?” I whispered. “You do not want me?”
