Chapter 182
Jax’s POV
The conversation between the officials and Dad had been going on for hours now.
Hannah sat beside me, crying like she had been for the past few days. All she had done was cry.
It was not like she had even held the baby in her hands. She did not know the gender of the baby even, yet she was crying like her grandDad died.
Dad sat in his chair, eyes blazing, jaw tight. His hand raised to stop all of the talking at once.
“I understand your points and I have taken them into consideration. I will pass my decision across to you all before the end of the day.”
“As for the fugitive…”
Being reminded of Mara was enough to make Dad’s fist come down hard on the table. “I have sent my guards to capture her. Once she is brought back to the pack, her public trial would be conducted-”
Dad was interrupted by a chair scraping against the ground.
His gaze snapped towards Mum who had gotten up abruptly. Rather than apologize, she looked him dead in the eyes. “What? Do you want to execute me too?”
The entire room fell dead silent and slowly, the pack officials filed out of the room one after the other.
I handed Hannah over to the matron to take her back to the room to rest. Before I could speak, Dad stood in front
of Mum.
“What was the meaning of that?”
Mum scoffed. “The meaning of what, Paul? Explain to me. You know what? Don’t. Because clearly, you think I am
an idiot!”
Dad’s brows scrunched. “I did not say that. Where are you getting that-”
“From you!” she snarled. “You heartless son of a bitch! I must have been dense when I thought I could make a relationship work with someone as egoistic and selfish as you are.”
My brows could have lifted to my hairline and I wished I had left the room when I had the chance.
In all of my twenty years, I had never heard Mum speak to Dad like that. Not once.
She was always calm and understanding but somehow, this situation had pushed her to this.
I turned to Dad, expecting him to be angry but he was more stunned than anything.
That was when I realized that Mum was crying.
“Paul, I have had Mara by my side for years. She shifted into her wolf in my arms. I have come to know her as my own daughter,” she whispered through her tears. “And you…”
She poked his chest. “Without hearing her side of the story, without being there to see the truth for yourself, you want to convict her. You will execute her based on the testimony of an outsider who was trying to molest your daughter-in-law and her step-Dad with a history of abusing her.”

Mum’s hands flew into her hair. “Goddess, how can you be so blind? How can I be so blind? What was I thinking When I had children with you?”
“Diane-”
“No!” she yelled. “No! No! You do not get to speak to me like I am the problem; I am not. Your son just got mated. You have not even told him congratulations and you placed his mate on house arrest.”
“I called him to my office-”
“Paul, they marked each other!” Mum cried. “What makes you think he would leave Chloe’s side for a moment?”
She paused and wiped her tears. “You know what? It’s alright. Chloe bought a house. It is in Manhattan. She and Axel might move anytime now. I am going with them.”
Her voice was deadly calm. That kind of calm that everyone in the family knew meant that Mum was serious.
Dad took a step towards her. “Diane, hold on. We can talk about this-”
She moved his hand out of his grip like touching him physically disgusted her. “Jax,” she called me and I snapped to my feet. “There is a suitcase I have packed by my bedside. Take it to Axel’s cabin.”
“D-Diane!” Dad said, slowly starting to panic. “You already packed. Are you serious?”
Without another response, she walked out of the conference room, heading downstairs. I walked to her bedroom and picked up the suitcase.
When I stepped out, Hannah stood in front of our bedroom door, watching me with a frown.
“Where are you going with that?” she asked.
Her nosiness could be irritating sometimes. Since she told everyone that she was so heartbroken, she should be resting.
“Mum is moving in with Axel,” I said curtly.
Hannah’s face twisted in disbelief. “And Alpha Paul is just going to let her? The Luna of the pack cannot go to live with a criminal!”
“Since when did it become your job to dictate where I can and cannot go?”
Hannah flinched, turning around with a warm smile but Mum shoved her out of the way, plucking her suitcase from my hand.
“I remembered that pill bottles have an uncanny habit for turning up in the weirdest of places,” Mum said blankly. “If I do not take care of my things, it might be my head on the chopping block next.”
“Diane, you know I would never do that to you,” Dad said, following after her. “We can…”
He trailed off as she walked past him.
Before she could go down the stairs, she stopped and looked back.
“Do not dare call either Chloe or me to handle Luna work. After all, we are associates in crime and will undergo public trials. That is the price I must bear for trusting the wrong people.”
She turned back to the desk. “I left my seal on the table.”
