"Ms. Simmons, are you awake?" Susan's voice drifted through the door.
Seraphina responded softly and got up to open it.
Susan stood in the doorway with a warm smile. "Ms. Simmons, Mr. Langford asked me to find out what you'd like for breakfast. The kitchen is fully stocked, so just name it."
Seraphina felt a bit overwhelmed by the attention. "There's no need to go to any trouble. Anything simple is fine."
"That won't do," Susan replied with a chuckle. "You're eating for two now, so you need proper nourishment. Mr. Langford specifically instructed us to prepare a menu tailored for an expectant mother."
Seraphina froze slightly.
Lucian had left instructions?
*Mommy, see? Daddy is actually super attentive!* Little Bean chimed in, practically vibrating with excitement. *He's just the strong, silent type who doesn't say much, but he cares about you!*
Seraphina lowered her gaze, her emotions a tangled mess.
She followed Susan downstairs and found Lucian already seated in the dining room.
He wore a dark gray loungewear set, stripping away the sharp, imposing edge of his tailored suits from the night before and replacing it with a relaxed elegance.
Hearing her footsteps, he lifted his gaze and looked in her direction.
"Awake?"
Seraphina nodded. "Morning."
"Have a seat."
She sat across from him as Susan swiftly served breakfast.
The spread was delicate—a warm bowl of oatmeal, a few savory sides, and a steaming glass of milk.
"I wasn't sure what you preferred, so I made a little bit of everything," Susan said with a smile. "Give it a try. If it's not to your liking, I can whip up something else."
"Thank you. This all looks wonderful."
Seraphina picked up her spoon and lowered her head to eat.
The atmosphere settled into an inexplicably harmonious silence.
*Mommy, look at Daddy!* Little Bean started fanning the flames again. *He looks so handsome today! Look at his side profile, look at his eyelashes, look at his hands...*
Seraphina mentally cut him off: *Can you just let me eat in peace?*
*I don't need to eat!* Little Bean declared righteously. *I'm busy scoping out the enemy for you!*
Seraphina was speechless.
Enemy?
He was right. After today, she would have to face the wolves waiting at her door.
*Don't be scared, Mommy! Daddy is here, and he definitely won't let anyone bully you!* Little Bean's voice chimed in perfectly, brimming with blind confidence.
Seraphina lowered her eyes.
Lucian's gaze lingered on her downcast lashes for a brief second.
"I have a proposal," he suddenly said.
Seraphina looked up, slightly bewildered.
"We enter a contract marriage."
She was stunned.
"Excuse me?"
Lucian leaned back, resting against his chair.
His posture was relaxed, but his eyes were sharp.
"You are pregnant with my child, and I refuse to abandon my responsibilities. However, you know the situation with my family. I need a logical explanation for suddenly having a pregnant woman in my life."
