Seraphina listened quietly, letting him speak.
"My elders have been breathing down my neck to settle down recently," Lucian continued, his tone as detached as if he were discussing a corporate merger. "If I tell them I'm already married and expecting a child, they should be more than satisfied."
Grandma Eleanor was so desperate for Lucian to tie the knot that she had practically broadcasted to the world that she would accept any bride, as long as she was female.
It had gotten to the point where Lucian was actively avoiding Langford Manor.
Seraphina understood immediately.
It was mutually beneficial.
He needed a wife in name to placate his family, and she needed his formidable backing to fend off the Sullivans and her own treacherous relatives.
This was especially vital considering the primary patent she held. She had licensed it to Sebastian, and the contract was set to expire in exactly two months.
It was a breakthrough she had developed alongside her professor during grad school, and the patent was legally registered under her name.
Back then, Sebastian was still her loving boyfriend. When he claimed he needed her patent to secure a massive government contract, she had signed the authorization papers without a second thought.
Now that they had torn each other to shreds, she was absolutely going to claw that authorization back.
And given that a staggering sixty percent of Sebastian's corporate revenue relied on that very government contract, it would ruin him.
Seraphina raised her head and met Lucian's eyes. "And I need a powerful backer so Sebastian won't dare pull any dirty tricks over my patent."
Lucian's eyebrow twitched ever so slightly.
"You hold a patent?"
Seraphina delivered the news casually. "Yes. The core technology keeping Sebastian's company afloat is mine. If I refuse to renew the license, his empire will collapse within six months."
Lucian stared at her, his gaze suddenly calculating.
This woman, who had seemed utterly cornered at her own wedding, was actually holding a knife to Sebastian's throat?
*Mommy!* Little Bean shrieked with excitement. *You didn't tell me you were such a badass! I'm totally bragging about this later!*
Seraphina told him silently: *I'm just a tech nerd.*
Lucian withdrew his piercing gaze, his tone remaining level. "In that case, you need a legitimate title more than ever."
"A title?"
Seraphina pondered it for a moment.
The terms were incredibly tempting.
She would gain a powerful shield, her baby would have a legitimate identity, and Lucian would be free of his family's nagging.
They would each get what they wanted, with zero emotional strings attached.
Seraphina's lips curved into a faint smile. "Alright. I accept."
Lucian gave a brisk nod and stood up. "I'll have my lawyers draft the agreement. We'll head out to get the marriage license today."
"Today?"
"Is that a problem?"
Seraphina shook her head.
He was right; the sooner, the better.
She needed the impenetrable armor of being Mrs. Langford to shut her enemies down for good.
