Seraphina sat in her chair, her gaze casually sweeping across the dining room.
A moment later, footsteps echoed from the staircase.
Sienna Simmons descended the steps at a sluggish pace, dressed in a loose, oversized maternity dress, one hand supporting her lower back and the other gripping the railing.
"Mommy! Her tummy is totally fake!" Little Bean suddenly shrieked.
Seraphina's eyelashes fluttered slightly, but her face remained entirely composed.
"There's no baby in there at all!" Little Bean continued, utterly baffled. "It's a fake! Why would she pretend to be pregnant?"
A flash of cold realization crossed Seraphina's eyes. "So this is the real reason they invited me here today."
"What do you mean?" Little Bean asked, confused.
A chilling gleam settled in Seraphina's gaze. "They didn't invite me here for dinner. They invited me here to be their scapegoat."
Supporting her belly, Sienna waddled over and sat across from Seraphina, flashing a sugary-sweet smile. "Seraphina, you made it. Dad talks about you every single day, and I've missed you so much too."
Listening to that saccharine speech made Seraphina feel physically sick.
"Mommy, Sienna is being so manipulative right now! It's absolutely disgusting!" Little Bean complained from her womb.
Seraphina gently rested a hand on her own stomach to soothe him.
Instead of answering Sienna, Seraphina kept her gaze fixed on the prominent bump.
If Little Bean didn't possess telepathic abilities, she might not have seen through the silicone disguise.
Seraphina's stony silence caused Sienna's smile to falter for a second, but she quickly recovered her composure.
