"I know you're not." Lucian lowered his head, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "I'm the one who doesn't want to go."
She knew how stubborn he was; once he made up his mind, nothing could sway him.
So, she didn't bother trying to talk him out of it.
He studied her face. "Can you walk? Let me help you to bed."
"My legs are like jelly." She reached out both arms in a silent demand to be carried, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Carry me."
He glanced down at her heavily rounded stomach and let out a helpless, affectionate chuckle.
"I can carry you, but you have to stay still."
"I know, I know."
He bent down, sliding one arm behind her back and the other beneath her knees, lifting her effortlessly into his arms.
Seraphina immediately wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face in the crook of his shoulder.
Her pregnant belly pressed between them, making the position a little awkward.
Still, he carried her up the stairs with slow, steady steps.
Reaching the second floor, he nudged the bedroom door open with his foot and gently laid her on the mattress, treating her as if she were made of fragile glass.
The moment her back hit the soft mattress, she let out a contented sigh.
"So comfortable."
He slipped the slippers off her feet and pulled the duvet over her.
"I'm going to take a shower. Go to sleep."
"Okay," she murmured obediently, her eyes already sliding shut.
He lingered by the bed for a moment just watching her before finally turning toward the master bathroom.
By the time he walked out, she was dead to the world, her breathing deep and even, looking utterly angelic.
He climbed into bed as quietly as possible, reaching over to dim the nightstand lamp to a soft amber glow.
Lying down beside her, he rolled onto his side and rested his hand over her stomach.
Inside, Little Bean gave a tiny kick, as if greeting his father.
The corner of Lucian's mouth quirked up. He lightly tapped his fingers against her skin.
