By the time the car pulled into the upscale neighborhood, the night had already deepened.
Lucian checked his phone. There were no unread messages or missed calls.
It surprised him a little.
Lately, whenever he came home late, Seraphina would text him to ask when he'd be back, sometimes throwing in a cute sticker just to be playful.
In the final stages of her pregnancy, she had grown deeply reliant on him.
Lucian secretly savored it; the feeling of being needed grounded him.
The absolute silence tonight felt unusually out of character.
Parking in the garage, he stepped out, his strides notably quicker than usual.
When he walked through the front door, the foyer light was still on, casting a warm, welcoming glow.
Lucian swapped his shoes for slippers and strode into the living room, only to find Seraphina curled up on the sofa, her head tilted to the side, fast asleep.
He stopped by the couch and gazed down at her peaceful face, a heavy wave of pure tenderness washing over him.
She was getting exhausted so easily these days.
He crouched down, intending to carry her up to bed.
But just as he leaned in and slid his arms around her—
"Mmm..."
Seraphina let out a soft, sleepy murmur. Her eyelashes fluttered, and she slowly opened her eyes.
Seeing him there, she thought she was still dreaming.
"You're back?" she mumbled, her voice thick and gravelly from sleep.
"Yeah, I'm back." Lucian reached out and pulled the light throw blanket up over her shoulders. "Why didn't you sleep in the bedroom?"
"I was waiting for you... but then I dozed off watching TV." She rubbed her eyes and stifled a yawn. "What time is it?"
"Almost midnight."
"It's that late?" Seraphina blinked, then pressed her hands against the cushions to sit up, her movements slow and clumsy.
