Lucian's eyes remained locked onto Seraphina's face.
Instead of getting angry, Seraphina actually laughed. "And what possible motive would I have to do that?"
"If I actually wanted to sabotage you, why would I have told you York came to see me in the first place?"
Lucian nodded. He reached out and gently took her hand. "Sera, I didn't tell you this because I suspect you. I'm telling you so you know what's happening."
"I just wanted you to be prepared."
"I know," Seraphina replied, squeezing his hand in return.
"Evie barged into the office today to cause a scene."
Seraphina paused. "If that's the case, then this was definitely premeditated."
"Evie has been living abroad for years. Barely anyone here knows who she is."
She thought for a second. "The only person who spends that much time with her is Melody."
Lucian nodded in agreement. "Exactly."
"But Melody hasn't had any contact with York either."
"Which means there's a third party involved."
Little Bean's excited voice suddenly echoed in her mind. "Mommy! I remember now! That day outside the Manor, besides that creepy guy, I heard another set of footsteps! Someone else was hiding nearby!"
Seraphina narrowed her eyes.
Little Bean's intuition was never wrong.
She didn't repeat the baby's exact words, but she looked at Lucian with absolute certainty. "You run your investigation, and I'll run mine. Give me three days, and I'll hand you the truth."
Seeing the fierce, unwavering confidence in her eyes, Lucian's heart skipped a beat.
This woman was never a fragile vase waiting to be protected.
"Deal," he said softly. "But if things get dangerous, you tell me immediately."
Seraphina smirked. "That's more like it."
