Lucian pinched the bridge of his nose, a troubled look crossing his face.
He hadn't expected Evie to take her tantrum this far.
Overhearing the conversation, Seraphina held out her hand, motioning for Lucian to pass her the phone.
Lucian hesitated for a second before handing it over.
"Grandma Eleanor, it's Seraphina. I'll bring Little Bean to Langford Manor tomorrow to visit you. And while I'm there... I'd like to try talking to Evie."
Eleanor was momentarily stunned. She was thrilled at the prospect of seeing Little Bean.
But Evie was so aggressively hostile toward Seraphina.
Would it end in a disaster?
Over the phone, Eleanor's tone noticeably softened. "Oh, Seraphina... it's my fault for being so useless. I can't talk any sense into Evie, and now it's come to this... sigh..."
"I'm so sorry you have to deal with this."
Seraphina brushed it off with a warm smile. "It's fine. We're family."
After hanging up, she noticed Lucian staring at her intently.
Seraphina turned to meet his gaze. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
Lucian remained silent for a long moment before finally speaking. "You don't have to force yourself."
Seraphina shook her head, her lips pressed together. "I'm not forcing myself. Evie is being used as a pawn, and she doesn't even realize it."
"If this continues, it's only going to tear our family apart."
"Wouldn't that be giving our enemies exactly what they want?"
Lucian rested his chin on Seraphina's shoulder, his warm breath fanning against her neck as he spoke. "You make a fair point."
He took her hand, his fingers giving hers a gentle squeeze. "But still, I don't want to see you get hurt."
"Your well-being comes first. If she makes you uncomfortable or disrespects you, just walk away. I'll handle the rest."
