Seraphina and Little Bean were heading back to Lyra Bay from Langford Manor.
In the back seat, Little Bean lay comfortably in his car seat, his large eyes darting around.
His inner voice echoed in Seraphina's mind. "Mommy, after running a rigorous emotional diagnostic, I can confirm Evie's guilt index has skyrocketed from 12% to 17%! But we're still nowhere near the breaking point. You need to turn up the heat!"
Seraphina turned to look at the infant who was barely a few months old, the corner of her mouth twitching.
"Where exactly are you learning how to do quantitative percentage analysis?"
Little Bean proudly blew a spit bubble. "Natural talent."
Seraphina reached out and poked his chubby cheek. "Oh, please. Last time you gave Lucian a trust rating of 120 out of 100. Your scoring system is severely skewed."
Little Bean huffed defensively. "That's the exclusive Daddy Bonus. It doesn't count in the official algorithm."
Sitting beside them, Susan watched Seraphina talking to the baby and couldn't help but laugh. "My Lady, it's almost as if the young heir can actually understand every word you're saying."
Seraphina forced a dry laugh. "Haha... well, it's always good to talk to babies. Helps their development."
"Mommy, your ears get red when you lie. Please work on your professional composure."
Without missing a beat, Seraphina pulled her hat down just enough to cover her ears.
Back at Lyra Bay, Susan busied herself in the kitchen prepping dinner.
Seraphina had just settled Little Bean down when she heard the front door open.
Little Bean's ears practically worked like radar dishes. "Daddy's footsteps detected. Fast cadence, wide stride. Preliminary analysis suggests he's in an excellent mood. He clearly has major news for Mommy, and he's desperate to see her."
Seraphina was speechless. "Are you a baby or a behavioral profiler?"
Little Bean replied smoothly. "I'm a full-stack genius baby, thank you very much."
Lucian pushed the door open.
"You're home."
Seeing Lucian, Seraphina greeted him with a warm smile.
He offered a low hum in response, dropping his briefcase before immediately pulling Seraphina into his arms and kissing her cheek.
"And the internal routing of Protocol C points directly to Zachary Banks, the Vice Director of Strategic Investment."
"He has an indirect connection to Landon. Zachary's wife is a distant cousin of Charlene."
From his crib, Little Bean's inner voice was practically screaming. "Protocol C! I knew it was Protocol C! I always suspected Protocol C was the most likely leak because it had the tightest distribution chain!"
He paused for a beat before adding, "Even though I had absolutely no idea there were A, B, and C versions to begin with."
Seraphina fought back a laugh.
Her son was an absolute master of hindsight.
"But..."
Lucian trailed off, looking at Seraphina.
Seraphina smiled, perfectly in sync with his train of thought.
They didn't need words to understand exactly what the other was thinking.
