"Ms. Monroe," Lucian said suddenly.
Hearing the formal address, Melody stiffened, staring at him in sheer disbelief.
"Lucian, you..." Every word felt like ash on her tongue.
"I apologize you had to witness today's unfortunate drama. If there is nothing else, you should head home."
His tone was ice-cold and entirely detached, as if he were dismissing a stranger.
Melody pretended not to notice the freezing distance in his voice. She immediately spun around on her heels.
However, she didn't head for the front gates. Instead, she hurried in the direction Evie had gone. "I should go check on Evie. She's completely soaked; she must be miserable right now."
Lucian watched her panicked retreat without saying another word.
He turned back to Seraphina, his voice dropping into a low, gentle register. "Come on, let's go get you changed before you catch a cold."
Seraphina gave a small nod. "Okay."
He took her hand, and in that moment, his firm, warm grip was the only comfort against her freezing skin.
Lucian led her upstairs.
The moment the guest bedroom door clicked shut behind them, all of Lucian's stoic restraint vanished.
He crouched in front of her, wrapping his warm hands around her freezing fingers. "I'm sorry."
His voice was remarkably hoarse.
Seraphina felt an ache in her chest, but she shook her head. "You aren't the one who needs to apologize."
Meeting his intense gaze, she calmly recounted exactly what had transpired by the pond.
Her voice remained remarkably steady.
But when she firmly stated that someone had shoved Evie from behind, Lucian's pupils contracted sharply.
"Are you certain? Evie didn't push you on her own?"
Seraphina nodded slightly. "I suspect it was Melody, but I don't have any concrete proof."
Lucian tightened his grip on her hands. "The security cameras by the pond are broken. I just scheduled a repair crew for today, so..."
