"I need to be on-site within fifteen minutes."
Frank hesitated. "Mr. Langford, the police are already involved. Should we wait—"
"No waiting."
Meanwhile, a battered black van was rattling violently down the dirt roads toward the mountains.
Seraphina woke up to total darkness.
A dull, throbbing pain radiated from the back of her head. Her hands were bound tightly behind her back, a thick fabric sack pulled over her head, and she could feel the vehicle bouncing over rough terrain.
The sound of tires crunching over loose gravel told her they were far past city limits. The air was too quiet.
She held her breath, straining to listen.
Two men were in the front seats. One had a rough, gravelly voice and was on the phone.
"We'll stick to the plan once we're there. The charges are already set up in the cave. We blow it and vanish."
The other man chimed in, his voice high-pitched and grating. "What the hell did this chick do to the boss to warrant getting blown to pieces?"
The gravel-voiced man grunted. "Who cares? Don't ask questions. We're just getting paid to do a job."
Seraphina's blood ran cold.
Explosives. They were going to blow her up.
Instinctively, she tried to call out to Little Bean in her mind, desperate for that familiar connection. Nothing. The distance must be too great.
She covertly flexed her wrists, testing the tension of the ropes.
They were pulled brutally tight, biting deep into her skin.
Breaking free right now was impossible.
Seraphina began counting seconds in her head. About half an hour passed before the van finally lurched to a halt.
The doors slammed, and the trunk popped open.
Rough hands grabbed her, tossing her over a broad shoulder like a sack of potatoes.
Through the frayed seams of the bag, she caught faint slivers of light and shadowy trees as the man carried her straight into the mouth of a cavern.
She was thrown violently onto the damp, stone floor.
Squeezing her eyes shut, she forced her body to stay entirely limp, playing dead.
"Check if she's breathing," the gruff man ordered.
