Seraphina ignored them and forced her trembling legs to run. She had to know if that draft was a real exit.
The cool wind hit her face from the absolute darkness ahead.
There had to be a way out.
She glanced back over her shoulder just as a deafening crash shook the cavern.
Before the mercenaries could even brace themselves, Lucian's massive SUV violently smashed through the jagged rock entrance.
Lucian kicked the mangled door open and climbed out, the windshield shattered into a spiderweb of glass behind him.
A sharp gash on his forehead wept blood down his brow, but he didn't even bother to wipe it away.
His predatory gaze swept the dimly lit interior.
He stepped forward, instantly locking onto the faint sounds of shifting boots and shallow breathing.
The tall mercenary lunged from the shadows, sweeping his combat blade straight for Lucian's throat.
Anticipating the strike, Lucian pivoted, smoothly dodging the lethal blow.
But the edge of the blade caught his left arm, instantly soaking his sleeve in dark crimson.
He didn't back down. Instead, he lunged, seizing the man's knife-wielding wrist. With a brutal twist, he disarmed him, sending the blade clattering to the floor.
The tall man didn't panic. His combat training was elite.
He drove his knee directly into Lucian's gut, and the two men locked into a savage brawl.
The short mercenary charged in to blindside Lucian.
From the shadows, Seraphina watched the two men corner her husband—one grappling his right arm while the other rained heavy blows into his ribs.
Through the chaos, Lucian's eyes found hers.
Seeing her alive and standing sent a massive wave of relief crashing through his chest.
"Sera."
She was covered in blood and dirt, the torn zipper of her dress exposing her bruised, scraped skin.
