Melody Monroe sneered inwardly.
Seraphina Simmons.
So what if she had Lucian Langford?
In the corporate world, if no one was willing to follow you, you were just an empty shell propped up on a pedestal.
Meanwhile, Seraphina headed straight for the top floor.
Seeing her, Christian Chase immediately stood up. "Mrs. Langford, Mr. Langford is inside."
Seraphina nodded. "Is he busy?"
Christian smiled warmly. "No matter how busy he is, he always has time for you."
Seraphina pushed the door open and walked in.
Lucian was reviewing documents. Hearing the noise, he looked up, and upon seeing Seraphina, he set his pen down.
"Here for lunch?"
Seraphina placed her bag on the sofa. "Didn't you already have someone prepare it?"
Lucian stood up. "I was afraid you wouldn't come."
Seraphina glanced at the lavish lunch spread already laid out on the table. "You prepared all of this and still say you were afraid I wouldn't show up?"
Lucian pulled out a chair for her. "I was taking a gamble."
Seraphina sat down. "And did you win?"
Lucian pushed a bowl of soup toward her. "For now, yes."
Christian quietly closed the door behind him.
Only the two of them were left in the office.
Seraphina picked up her silverware. She had barely taken her first bite when Lucian spoke. "They didn't notify you about today's meeting, did they?"
Seraphina looked at him. "Did Christian tell you?"
"The surveillance system for The Innovation & Strategy Division flagged an abnormal retrieval log," Lucian replied.
Seraphina raised an eyebrow. "Are you investigating me?"
Lucian's expression remained calm. "The system sends automatic alerts to me."
Seraphina stared at him.
"I didn't open them," Lucian added.
Only then did Seraphina withdraw her gaze. "Right. They didn't invite me to the meeting."
Lucian slowed his movements as he served her more soup. "They all went over to Melody's side?"
"Yeah."
"Not a single person stayed?"
"Not for now."
Lucian placed the soup in front of her. "They're trying to isolate you."
Seraphina took a sip. "I noticed."
Lucian watched her closely. "How are you supposed to work without a team?"
Seraphina blinked. "I have a trick up my sleeve."
Seeing her confident demeanor, the deep furrow in Lucian's brow finally relaxed a little.
