Seymour took the phone, his eyes scanning the approval chain. The polite smile on his face nearly slipped.
The final approver was the Technical Committee.
The authorization reason was crystal clear.
*External collaboration for Group A's core algorithms. Personnel credentials verified.*
Seymour gritted his teeth and swallowed the reprimand he had been about to unleash.
Melody stepped out of her office, her gaze locking instantly onto Winona's face. The file in her hand slipped and fell to the floor, but she didn't even notice.
A coworker bent down to pick it up. "Melody?"
Melody didn't move.
Winona Jacobs.
The Lead Strategist of The Zenith Collective from the new energy competition.
During the last tournament, it was this exact team that had completely shattered her rhythm, dragging her from a guaranteed top-three finish down to seventh place.
She had later pulled strings using her family's connections to investigate 'S', only to find an impossibly clean alias.
No photos, no university records, no interviews. Her teammates had even accepted the championship trophy on her behalf.
And now, S's legendary teammates were standing right beside Seraphina.
Melody quickly composed herself and walked over. "You certainly are charismatic, Seraphina, to be able to recruit Winona and her team."
Winona frowned. "We don't know you, Melody."
A few heads popped up from their cubicles.
Melody offered a tight smile. "We met at the last competition. You left quite an impression."
She then turned her attention to Seraphina. "But it seems your influence still falls a little short. Didn't S come?"
The office erupted into a frenzy of whispers.
"S?"
"The S from the team that took first place in the new energy preliminaries?"
"Winona and these guys are S's teammates?"
"How on earth did Seraphina Simmons manage to hire them?"
"It has to be Mr. Langford pulling the strings, right? Who else could bring in heavy hitters like this?"
The mockery in the room instantly morphed into bitter envy.
Winona opened her mouth to retort, but Seraphina raised a hand to stop her.
She looked directly at Seymour. "Mr. Marshall, Group A's roster is full. Where are our desks?"
Seymour's temple twitched.
Melody chimed in softly, "Seraphina, no one means any harm. We're just surprised you managed to invite them."
Seraphina met her gaze. "Are you done being surprised?"
