Seraphina walked over to her desk and stopped dead in her tracks.
Someone else was sitting in her chair.
The man was wearing headphones, typing away at his keyboard. His water bottle and documents were piled onto her desk, while the files Seraphina had carefully organized that morning were shoved into a corner, buried beneath a stack of old magazines.
In the far corner, right next to the printer, sat a new, empty desk.
It was narrow and crammed right next to the recycling bin.
A sticky note was slapped onto the surface.
*Group Lead Simmons' New Desk.*
The handwriting was a messy, mocking scrawl.
A few people in the office stifled their laughter.
Seymour Marshall strolled out of his office with a coffee mug in hand. Spotting Seraphina standing there, he feigned surprise. "Oh, Seraphina, you're back?"
Seraphina looked at the man sitting in her spot. "Who told you to sit here?"
The man pulled off his headphones, putting on an innocent face. "Mr. Marshall said we needed to rearrange the desks by groups. This spot is closer to Group B's archive section, so I just grabbed it for now."
Seraphina turned her gaze to Seymour.
Seymour shrugged nonchalantly. "Since the project groups were split, it makes sense to reallocate the desks. Right now, you're the only one in Group A, so sitting in the corner will give you some peace and quiet for independent work."
Someone nearby muttered under their breath, "She's the Lead. She can work from anywhere."
"Yeah, exactly. The corner is nice and quiet. No one will bother her while she holds her one-woman meetings."
A few more snickers rippled through the room.
Melody emerged from her temporary office. Seeing the commotion, she furrowed her brow slightly. "What's going on here?"
Someone immediately chimed in, "Nothing, Melody. Just rearranging the desks, but Lead Simmons doesn't seem too happy about it."
Melody walked over. "Seraphina, if it really bothers you, I can ask the team to try and accommodate you."
Seraphina looked at her. "You'll accommodate me?"
Melody's tone was infuriatingly gentle. "Everyone is in Group B now, so moving all the desks around again would be quite a hassle. Why don't you just make do for now, at least until Group A gets some actual members?"
Seraphina reached out and pulled her files out from under the heavy stack of magazines.
The corners of the pages were bent and crumpled.
She looked down, smoothing them out in silence.
The man sitting in her chair rolled his eyes. "It's just a few pieces of paper. No need to be so dramatic, right?"
