My Unborn Baby Chose My Husband for Me novel Chapter 541

Evie pulled Melody a half-step forward, holding her breath. "Lucian, Melody has a painting in the exhibition today. I want to win the bid and give it to her. Is that okay?"

Lucian looked up. "Sure."

Evie was just about to smile.

Lucian added, "You don't need to ask me about things like this. Decide for yourself."

The chin Evie had proudly tilted up froze mid-air.

She asked that question to make Lucian praise Melody in front of Seraphina. Even a simple "it's a nice painting" would have been enough to show Seraphina that Melody and the Langford family had a different kind of relationship.

But Lucian's attitude was entirely casual, as if he didn't care about the matter at all.

Melody maintained her gentle smile on the outside, but inside, she was seething.

Lucian used to treat her exactly like this—polite, courteous, utterly faultless.

But when he looked at Seraphina, he became gentle and considerate, as if he were a completely different person.

He would abandon all his principles just for Seraphina!

Seraphina paid them no mind, simply leaning over to adjust the light blanket over Lucian's lap.

Evie felt even more stifled watching them. "Seraphina, everyone here today is a prominent figure in the city. It's your first time accompanying Lucian to an event like this. You must have prepared something to donate, right?"

Melody lowered her eyes, feigning curiosity. "What does Ms. Simmons plan to donate?"

Seraphina was now Mrs. Langford. If she presented something too expensive, people would say she was using the Langford wealth to show off. If she presented something cheap, she'd be mocked for being petty.

Charity events were about donating items, but what they really measured was face.

Seraphina rested her hand on the armrest of Lucian's wheelchair. "It's just a small token of sincerity. I'd rather keep it a surprise."

Evie immediately sneered. "A surprise? Or did you genuinely not prepare anything at all?"

Seraphina looked at her.

Evie felt a surge of panic under her gaze but forced herself to press on. "You can do whatever you want at home, and no one will say a word, but today isn't some casual get-together. Don't embarrass yourself by bringing out something cheap."

A few people nearby slowed their pace, casting subtle glances toward Seraphina.

Melody lowered her eyes, touching her necklace without saying a word.

Seraphina suddenly smiled. "Then we'll just have to see if the item my husband brought is worthy of your discerning eyes."
