After taking a few steps, Melody glanced back over her shoulder.
Seraphina was leaning down, whispering something to Lucian. Lucian was listening intently, completely ignoring a guest who had come over to greet him.
Melody suddenly felt that submitting her painting for the exhibition had turned into a complete joke.
She wanted Lucian to notice her.
But from beginning to end, his eyes were only on Seraphina.
Landon walked over with a wine glass, his gaze landing on her tense profile. "Feeling uncomfortable?"
Melody looked away. "You're awfully talkative today."
Landon chuckled. "Uncomfortable is right. If a person doesn't feel the sting, how will they ever figure out why they lost?"
Melody shot him a cold glare. "What are you trying to say?"
Landon raised his glass slightly, gesturing toward Seraphina and Lucian. "She dares to use Lucian as her shield because she knows he'll always back her up."
Melody's face grew even uglier.
Landon stepped half a pace closer, lowering his voice. "If you want to beat her, stop hoping Lucian will turn his head to look at you."
Melody gripped her clutch tighter. "Landon, you'd better not treat me like a fool."
Landon looked at her. "I never placate fools."
Melody turned and walked away.
Landon watched her back, the rim of his glass resting against his lips, though he took no sip.
On the other side, Seraphina suddenly felt a pressing need to find a restroom.
Her morning makeup routine had taken too long, and after boarding the yacht under the scrutiny of the crowd, she was just now feeling the tightness in her lower abdomen.
She handed her bag to Lucian. "I need to hit the restroom."
Lucian looked up. "Want me to go with you?"
Seraphina stared at him. "What do you think?"
Lucian suppressed the smile in his eyes. "I'll wait for you here."
Seraphina placed her clutch on his lap. "My phone is in there too. No snooping."
