In the dim corridor, a cleaning cart with a masked attendant was parked outside the women's restroom.
The person glanced up at the security camera, then reached out and placed a 'Closed for Maintenance' sign by the door.
Immediately following that, a faint rattling sound came from the door handle inside.
Seraphina finished washing her hands and was just about to push the door open, but the handle wouldn't budge.
She twisted it again.
The door had been locked from the outside.
Seraphina grabbed a paper towel to dry her hands and pounded forcefully on the door. "Is anyone there? The door won't open on my end. Could someone come help?"
It was quiet outside. No one was passing by.
She thought about making a call, only to remember her bag was with Lucian.
Seraphina slapped the door again. "Is anybody out there?"
Still no response.
She pounded a few more times. "Someone is locked in here! Open the door!"
The outside remained dead silent.
The music from the main hall drifted down the corridor, muffled by the heavy wooden door into a dull, thumping bass.
Seraphina looked up at the ceiling.
The ventilation window was at the very back. It was high up, but not entirely out of reach.
Just as she was about to go over and see if she could climb up, a weak cry for help came from the farthest stall. "Help me."
Seraphina froze and immediately rushed toward the back. "Who is it?"
The door of the last stall was slightly ajar.
She pushed it open to find a woman slumped beside the toilet, clutching her chest. Her face was deathly pale, and her chest was heaving violently.
Seraphina crouched down. "Gillian?"
Gillian forced her eyes open. Once she recognized the face in front of her, she gasped out in broken words, "Mrs... Mrs. Langford?"
Seraphina grabbed her shoulder and pulled her out of the cramped stall first. "Save your breath. What's wrong with you?"
Gillian leaned against the wall, her hands gripping her collar. Her breathing was visibly labored. "The scent... I have allergic asthma... there's an allergen in the diffuser... I'm having a reaction, but my inhaler is with my assistant."
Seraphina smelled the fragrance in the bathroom now, too.
She had been so focused on getting out earlier that she hadn't noticed.
