My Unborn Baby Chose My Husband for Me novel Chapter 88

A suffocating wave of utter boredom washed over Sebastian.

The rest of the meal passed in heavy silence.

Sienna kept trying to spark conversation, but he only offered a distracted nod or hum, his mind clearly miles away.

Recognizing she was losing the battle, she wisely dropped the chatter, her mind already spinning a new web of schemes.

...

When Seraphina returned to her dining room, Cedric was already back in his seat, chatting with Jules.

Lucian watched her walk in, his dark eyes lingering on her face to gauge her mood.

She took her seat next to him and took a sip of her water.

Right on cue, Lydia piped up. "Are you alright, Sera? I went to the restroom earlier and thought I saw some guy cornering you."

At her words, every single pair of eyes in the room instantly snapped to Seraphina.

She set her glass down, her voice perfectly level. "It was nothing. I just ran into someone I knew and exchanged a few words."

"Someone you knew?" Cedric swirled his drink, a nasty, playful smirk tugging at his mouth. "You ran into a friend here? It wouldn't happen to be the young heir of the Sullivan family, would it? I could have sworn I saw him hovering in the hallway earlier."

Seraphina's fingers curled tighter around her glass, but not a flicker of emotion breached her mask.

Lucian's gaze turned predatory and dark. He took a sip from his glass, saying absolutely nothing.

Sensing the sudden drop in temperature, Jules quickly intervened. "Cedric, you've had too much to drink. Keep your mouth shut."

Cedric offered a mock surrender and laughed, letting the subject drop.

But the damage was already done; his loaded words had planted a seed of scandalous speculation in everyone's minds.

Catching the hostile vibe, Lydia wisely chose not to prod any further, burying her face in her wine glass as if nothing had happened.

The dinner dragged on, the earlier relaxed atmosphere completely shattered by the tension.

Seraphina quietly pushed her food around her plate, feeling a growing knot of irritation.

She should have stayed in bed today. First, she had to endure Cedric's venomous little jabs, and then she literally walked straight into Sebastian. Absolute bad luck.
