Chapter 87. The One With the Power

Chapter 87: The One With the Power

Max

For once, I agreed with my father. Jeffrey had been gone for two days. Not only had there been no sightings of him, he had also been completely unreachable and that alone was dangerous.

“After all the lives we lost among our kind,” Jeffrey began, his voice calm, “I went to make sure that everyone in my pack was safe.”

My father scoffed. “As if they were actually affected.”

Jeffrey nodded, like he expected my father to say something like that and in response, he said, “What kind of a leader would I be if I showed no concern for my pack?”

My father tilted his head like he wasn’t buying that story. “While you’re right about that,” he said slowly, “is that the entire truth?”

Jeffrey furrowed his eyebrows. “I don’t understand.”

“I’ve been asking around.” My father stepped closer to him. “No one has seen you around your quarters or in the outer territories.” He paused. “Finally got over Nora’s death?”

My heart instantly began to race. He just has to bring that up like it was nothing. Apart from Tyler also not liking the way he spoke about it, I spotted Jeffrey’s hands twitch before he got it under control.

“I don’t understand what you’re trying to say.”

My father laughed softly and began to circle Jeffrey. “I murdered Nora in front of you,” he said casually. “She meant something to you. And yet here you are.” He stopped right in front of him. “You know there’s nothing you can do about it. So you disappeared for a few days and now you’re back, ready to serve me again, Because that’s your duty.”

Even though the words were cruel and calculated, Jeffrey exhaled slowly with a smile.

“Yes,” he admitted. “That’s the truth. Feelings aside, I live to serve the Lycan King.”

My father smiled in satisfaction. “Good.”

Jeffrey continued to speak as if nothing inside him was breaking. “My pack wasn’t affected by the attack. But they are ready to offer their support when needed.”

My father gave a nod of approval.

I began to feel like my brother and I were now wasting time there, but just before I could announce our departure, my mother beat me to it when she cleared her throat.

“Max, Tyler, you should get going now.”

My father didn’t even look at her. “Not yet,” he said. “I need a word with Max in private.”

I glanced at Tyler and he already knew that it wasn’t going to be good. But he looked away like he didn’t want to watch whatever was about to come next.

As I followed my father towards the stairs, my mother trailed after us, but my father stopped mid step and slowly turned to look back at her.

“I said in private,” he snapped. “Why are you following us?”

She froze with a look of confusion. “I… I just-”

“Stay where you are.”

She obeyed immediately.

When I looked back at her, she looked wounded and so small. I wasn’t even surprised by how I didn’t care. Whatever sympathy I might have had for her before had already burned out.

My father and I made it back inside the house and I expected him to turn towards the study. Instead, we kept walking in a particular direction. We then began to descend along some familiar stairs and my steps began to slow down when I realized we were heading to the dungeon.

“Why are we going down there?” I asked.

He didn’t answer right away and that was where began to panic a Attle

liking and it just felt like he was up to something.

“The werewolves of the Moon Frost Pack are outnumbered,” he said. “They always were. Their greatest weapon is Addison, but that will be handled. Davina knows what to do.” He then stopped in front of me. “When war comes, I expect you to stand where you belong.”

“With you, because I’m on your side,” I said immediately.

The words tasted bitter in my mouth because they weren’t true.

He studied my face and scoffed. “No. You’re telling me what you think I want to hear. That’s why I’m taking my own measures.”

My heart skipped a beat with panic. “What measures?”

He didn’t answer me this time, but the air shifted immediately and I felt it before I even saw her take physical form.

Davina stepped out of the shadows like she had been there for a while, her eyes fixed on me.

My father smiled in a sinister way and I knew that whatever he had planned for me, I wasn’t going to leave the dungeon the same way I had entered it.

What was done to me in the next five minutes had just changed everything for me. Even if there had ever been the tiniest glimmer of hope that I could get away, it was now completely gone.

The ride to the Academy of Warriors began in silence, which stretched on for as long as I didn’t feel like talking. I couldn’t bring myself to do it after what had happened in the dungeon.

It was Tyler who spoke first after he had been glancing at me constantly.

“Hey, what’s wrong with you?”

“It’s nothing,” I replied quickly, staring out the window.

He frowned. “You’ve been acting like this since we left home.”

I didn’t answer him.

Shifting in his seat so he could face my direction some more, he said, “What did ydu and dad talk about when you went back inside the house?”

“Nothing,” I said again.

He exhaled sharply. “You keep saying that, but it’s not convincing. You actually spent quite some time and-”

“I already told you that it’s nothing,” I snapped at him with my eyes shut. “Why won’t you just let it go?”

When I opened my eyes to finally look at him, his eyebrows were raised in shock. It wasn’t just that my reaction had upset him, he was also hurt and the guilt hit me immediately.

“Hey,” I said, rubbing a hand over my face. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to yell.”

He studied me for a second, then shrugged lightly. “It’s okay. Whatever it was, must’ve been really bad if you don’t want to

talk about it,”

“It wasn’t,” I said. “Nothing happened.”

He firmly shook his head. “What I’m about to say doesn’t require a response from you. There’s no way you went with him inside and just had a casual conversation.” He leaned back in his seat thoughtfully. “You know, when he told Mom to stay behind…” he chuckled with amusement. “She really thought things had changed and that they were equals now. She was furious and took it out on everyone who was outside. Everyone was unlucky to be nearby at that moment.”

As he went on to talk about how she’d snapped at Jeffrey, I barely heard him. My thoughts wouldn’t slow down when I remembered what had happened in the dungeon.

“Max?” Tyler said after finally noticing. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” I said.

“Are you sure?”

I didn’t answer him this time and he didn’t push.

Even though he didn’t fully understand what was going on with me, he decided to stop talking about that and just let the silence carry on. But that didn’t last because when his phone buzzed, his mood shifted instantly and he wouldn’t stop talking.

“Have I ever told you that talking to Jess is always the best part of my day?” He smiled down at the screen.

I managed to force a small smile for his sake. I was glad that he had someone like that.

I looked back out the window, thinking of how I couldn’t talk to Addison. I couldn’t even risk hearing her voice,

Tyler suddenly gasped. “Oh, you won’t believe what Jess just told me.”

“What is it?” my voice was flat as I looked at him again.

His eyes slightly narrowed like he was trying to measure how much I actually cared. “She’s going to be near the academy. I can meet up with her,” he said, his face brightening more each second. “She was saying that our parents rejecting her doesn’t change anything for her. She still-”

I stopped listening when something ahead caught my eye.

“Pull over!” I quickly told the chauffeur.
