Chapter 91: Join Us

Chapter 91: Join Us

Max

Just as it was during lunch, dinner felt like a meal no one was actually enjoying.

The table was set perfectly as usual, but the ambience was far from it.

I had barely touched my food when my father began to speak with so much pride.

“You both made the perfect impression tonight,” he said. “The support has increased significantly. Exactly as it should,”

Tyler kept his expression neutral and I wasn’t any different.

Our mother leaned forward to speak to my father, eager to be included. “Everyone was talking about them. I heard nothing but praise-”

“The meat is delicious,” my father cut her off without even looking at her.

The smile faded from her lips and once again, she looked so wounded and small.

Just as it had been earlier, Tyler and I felt nothing about it. We just didn’t care. Instead, we focused on eating, the sound of cutlery against the plates the only thing filling the room.

But that wasn’t until a distant noise began to grow closer. They were voices chanting. I glanced at Taylor and he looked back at me just for a second. We knew at that moment that our plan had started.

The sound grew louder and my father’s reaction made it clear that he knew that they were protesters.

“Again?” he asked with irritation. “This is the third time today. They would all be more useful to me if they brought gold instead of this noise.”

He was still complaining about the protesters when a guard rushed in and bowed. “The protesters have arrived. They wish to speak with you.”

He exhaled slowly. He was clearly annoyed, but he stood up anyway. He always did and it was because appearances mattered at a time like that.

“Very well.”

As he headed out of the dining room, Tyler and I rose to our feet and followed him without being told.

When we came outside, it was better than what Tyler and I had been expecting. The front yard was alive with movement and fire light as the voices overlapped. There were signs raised high and right at the front was Ruby as their leader. She was surrounded by her friends and members of her pack.

My father scanned them all with approval before he said, “Thank you for coming,” he said smoothly. “Your loyalty doesn’t go unnoticed.”

Ruby took a step forward and when she spoke, her voice was clear and confident. “With respect, that’s no longer enough.”

The crowd agreed with her.

She raised her chin, making her look even more confident. “If you truly stand with us, then let the princes walk with us tonight. Let them join us in the streets.”

As the crowd began to chant for my father to say yes, my brother and I held our breaths as we were hoping for the same thing.

My father’s eyes turned sharp as he considered it, like he was weighing the benefits. Then, he smiled.

“Very well,” he said. “They will walk with you. Of course, under guard.”

There was so much relief and excitement through the crowd that l’almost smiled.

The guards were expected. Tyler and I had already planned for something like that to happen.

As the two of us prepared to join the crowd, my father’s voice entered our heads through the mind link. It was cold with authority.

“You will do a good job.”

Tyler and I answered together without hesitation.

“Of course.”

When we stepped forward to join the protester Successfully unlocked!

Ruby was right next to me and I let it play out how she wanted it to be, because I knew that before the end of that protest, I would get to speak to Jeffrey in private.

Chapter 91: Join Us

Addison

My family and I came through the portal that night. It was my first time in witch territory and everything was so different. The air was colder and thicker, looking like it had magic floating in it. The ground wasn’t the usual dirt. It was made up of tiny stones that glowed in the dark. They were faintly pulsing as if they were alive.

“Welcome to our territory,” Madge said calmly as she led the way. “This place is older than any pack law and older than that kingdom.”

I glanced around, still captivated by everything I could see. In that territory, the sky looked purple and I had to ask Madge why it looked that way.

“That’s a protection barrier,” she said. “Nothing that comes from above can enter. Everyone needs special access if they’re to come into this place. You get to be the lucky family to have special access. I’m mostly talking to you, children. Your parents have been here before.”

I looked over at my parents and asked, “How many times have you been here?”

“It doesn’t matter,” my father said dismissively.

“Yes, it does,” my brothers and I said in unison.

No matter how hard we tried, they just wouldn’t tell us.

There were a few witches in the direction we were headed, but they didn’t seem to pay attention to us. Considering everything that was going on, no one would’ve wanted us there.

It was only then that I realized how much Madge was struggling to keep up that invisibility spell so we’d have safe passage. Lyra wasn’t with us and that had begun to weaken Madge each time she used her power to protect us.

She didn’t want to tell us, but we could see it now in her eyes, even sharing a knowing look.

She led us inside the house by the corner, which was the first one in that row and it was just as I thought it would be.

She made us feel comfortable inside and I decided to look around.

I was on my phone while checking out the kitchen when I came across something that made me pause for a moment as I couldn’t believe it.

Max was at the Academy of Warriors. He was dressed like a prince and looked so composed as he walked to the stage.

I heard him speak, and that voice sounded too pleased with everything that came out of his mouth. The captions at the bottom only made it worse. Those in attendance were also cheering.

According to everything I had heard and seen, he was on his father’s side.

I swiped again and the next video was worse when it loaded.

He and Tyler were walking through the streets, surrounded by protesters and right next to Max was Ruby.

My name was on so many signs. Some of them even had my face painted like I was the villain, but none of that got my attention as much as it did seeing him with her.

He wasn’t holding up any sign or saying anything at all. He was just there, but that still hurt me a lot.

Jeffrey had told my family that Max was innocent. He swore that was the truth and yet everything I saw told a different story. I didn’t understand.

Madge noticed before I could say anything. “Calm down.”

I let out a shaky breath. “He’s actually with Ruby and she seems to be enjoying it. He’s been part of the protest. Why?”

She crossed her arms. “Don’t forget that everyone has to be careful around the Warrick, especially his sons. You of all people should know what happens when someone steps out of line.”

I nodded in agreement, but it didn’t get rid of the ache in my chest.

I was still wondering if I should scroll to the next video when I received a call from Jess. I needed all the distractions I could get, even if it was just for a few seconds, which was why I didn’t hesitate to answer.

“Hey!” Her greeting sounded too bright and warm.
