Chapter 88 The Survivor

Chapter 88: The Survivor

Max

It took the chauffeur a while to stop the car as he could only think about my father’s orders to not stop anywhere until getting us to the Academy of Warriors.

I threatened him that I would just end up breaking the window so I could get out and that would only get him in more trouble. That made him change his mind instantly.

It put him at ease knowing that the guards from the car behind us would accompany us.

Tyler didn’t even have to ask why I had told the chauffeur to pull over. He could see the one I wanted to talk to just a few feet away. His name was Pete, the only survivor from his pack. Out of the twenty werewolves who had died, two of them were from two different packs and the other eighteen were all part of his pack.

As he stood by a small roadside stall to buy some cigarettes, he already looked like something extremely important had been taken away from him. And that was the case because he was the only one left.

When we started to approach him, he turned as soon as he sensed us. For a moment, none of us said a word. But when we were close enough, he bowed. It was respectful, but still felt empty in a way. Tyler and I didn’t even expect much from him, considering everything he was still going through.

The first words that came out of my mouth were the same ones that had been on my mind ever since I had heard which pack had lost almost everyone.

“I’m sorry for your loss,” said.

Pete nodded once. “Thank you.” There was no anger in his voice or warmth either. He exhaled slowly as he lit a cigarette. They rebuilt what used to be our pack house first. It’s beautiful, clean and strong, something it had never been before. I should be grateful.” He looked away. “It’s just that there’s no one left to live in it apart from me. I don’t even have a mate yet.”

All I could do at that moment was try to put myself in his situation and it was just as horrible.

“The guards came through the day after that disaster,” he continued. “They searched the wreckage and said they were looking for gold. Some of it was ours and included things passed down for generations. But once they said it was for the king…” he shrugged. “What was I supposed to do? Argue with men who still had families?”

He looked like he still had more to say from the way his jaw clenched, but first, he took a drag from his cigarette.

“On the day of that flood, it was my twentieth birthday. We all tried to stay safe but ended up scattered. I found them when it was over.” His voice was steady in a way that made what he was about to say even worse. “My parents, the elders and the little ones who hadn’t even learned to shift yet. They were everywhere, scattered like they never mattered.”

He looked at the sky, smiling like he could see the future. “Addison is a monster.”

I should’ve been the one to be deeply offended by what he had just said. Instead, it ended up being Tyler. I could tell he was about to say something, but I subtly lifted my hand to stop him. I knew that Pete deserved to speak and express the way he felt.

“She took everything from me, so I’ll stand with the king. I don’t care what it costs. She has to pay for what she’s done.”

I wanted to disagree with him because of what Addison meant to me, but at the same time, his anger was justified and I couldn’t take that away from him.

After bowing again, he turned to face the other direction and began walking away. My gaze lingered on him for a while until the guards behind us reminded us that we had to be on our way to the Academy of Warriors.

I wished that I could talk to Addison and tell her how deep the damage really was and how far it had spread. I wondered how much she knew.

When the car ride continued, I got to see most of Pike Hill for the first time ever since the day it had been flooded.

So many things that used to be familiar before now looked different. There were a few buildings that were half rebuilt and some houses were nothing more than frames, their insides exposed.

I thought about how my father had decided to come to the rescue of all those packs just so they could pledge allegiance to him and it was all working in his favor. They were all on a waiting list and for them, it was worth waiting because they had seen from Pete’s new packhouse what they could expect

Tyler continued to talk to me about Jess, but I Successfully unlocked! as more focused on those who walked past us with their heads down. There was no laughter Chatter in the streets. I even spotted a woman who limped and had the missing part of her leg wrapped up. It was clear that she wasn’t going to heal.

Chapter BB The Survivor

There was a man farther down the road who had an arm bound tightly against his chest and his sleeve was pinned where his hand should’ve been. I told myself that I should stop looking at all that and just look down at my phone or anywhere else, but I just couldn’t help it. I needed to see with my own eyes, not just hear the stories.

“This is…” Tyler trailed off. I didn’t even know when he had stopped talking about Jess.

“Yeah,” I murmured.

When we passed a group gathered near a broken fountain, I told myself not to make my gaze linger too much, but when I saw that child clutching an older woman’s skirt with his eyes looking too old for his face, I just had to look and my chest ached.

Just a few blocks before getting to the Academy of Warriors, the car began to slow down as there was a gathering up ahead. The street was filled with protesters who were chanting as they marched towards the palace. They were angry, but unified. They held up signs which made even Koa more furious than he already was.
