Chapter 90: The Plans

Max

“What do you mean Aunt Nora’s corpse was there when she was laid to rest?”

Tyler chuckled beside me, placing a hand on the wall as he nodded with amusement.

“It was definitely there,” he said. “That’s what Jess told me. She didn’t even realize that what she was actually telling me was important information.”

“That’s not possible,” I continued to say using the mind link. “Our father told Jeffrey to burn the corpse,”

Tyler’s smile faded and was replaced by something smarter.

“Exactly,” he said. “But did he?” He leaned closer to me. “Do you know what this means?”

I thought about it and didn’t say anything right away. Someone had disobeyed my father, and there were cracks in the foundation which he believed was unbreakable.

“If Nora’s body was intact,” then Jeffrey didn’t follow orders. Or couldn’t.” I thoughtfully narrowed my eyes. “And if that’s true…”

“Then not everyone is on his side,” Tyler finished.

While the idea felt heavy in my chest and was terrifying, it also filled me with hope.

“We need to talk to Jeffrey, Tyler said. “Alone.”

“At the palace?” I scoffed. “That’s impossible. You know what it’s like over there. Every wall and corridor has eyes and ears.”

“Come on. I’m not that careless. We’ll make it happen somewhere else. The question is how.”

It only took me a few seconds to think about it and I already had the perfect plan

I knew that Ruby was still lingering around in the hopes that I’d go back to her and looking at what I needed from her, I decided to go back.

“Follow me,” I said, already moving.

Tyler frowned. “What are you up to?”

“Just trust me,” I replied. “Wait and see.”

Ruby was pretending to scroll through her phone while clearly waiting for me and when I was close enough, she looked up, a look of surprise across her face before she masked it up with a smile.

“I didn’t think you’d come back,” she admitted.

I stopped beside her and got so close that anyone watching us would assume something more was going on. This time, I softened my expression, just so I could play the part.

“There have been protests in the street,” I said casually.

Her eyes lit

  1. “Yeah?”

“You said earlier that you wanted to help,” I continued. “And I think I know how you can.”

Her response was immediate and desperate. “I’ll do anything.”

I leaned close enough to whisper in her ear and she held her breath as she began to understand what I needed from her. She straightened up with excitement when I was done. “I’ll get started right away,” she said with a bow. “I’ll even rally my friends.”

And just like that, she was gone. I never thought she would be of good use to me.

Tyler came closer and threw an arm over my shoulder with a grin.

“You are unbelievable,” he said. “Using Ruby like that?”

I shrugged, feigning innocence. “She wanted to help and I just gave her the opportunity.”

“She’s going to think you’re interested in something more.”

“She can think whatever she wants,” I said flatly. “I only have eyes for one girl.”

“I have to admit that your plan is genius. And rovs

I shook my head at him before he could get too excited.

“Even if it’s easier for you to meet Jess, we still have a problem. We can’t move as we please. The guards were given clear instructions and won’t allow anything outside of that.”

He nodded in understanding with a frown, but that didn’t last long as a little smile spread across his lips. It was the kind that meant he had already come up with something else.

“You are right,” he said. “So we change the situation in our favor.”

My eyes narrowed. “How?”

He tilted his head towards the dining hall. “Follow me.”

I didn’t even argue, wanting to see where this would lead.

When we walked back into the dining hall, the place was just as noisy as when we had left. The warriors were laughing. singing, dancing and drinking.

It was going to take a lot if Tyler was to get their attention, and I waited to see if he would succeed.

He inhaled deeply, then roared. The sound was so powerful that it sliced through all the chaos. Everyone’s voices faded out, even those who were mid-laugh.

But no one was scared. They were actually impressed.

Tyler grinned like he now owned the place and in a way, he did.

“Once again,” he said loudly, “congratulations to all of you.”

Everybody began to cheer louder than before.

He raised a hand to calm them and when there was silence again, he continued, “My brother and I have never attended one of these parties before. That’s what makes today special.”

The approval to everything he had just said was instant as everyone nodded and grinned, looking at my brother and I with so much admiration.

“And since it’s such a special day,” Tyler continued with so much excitement in his tone, “why don’t we make it memorable? We’ll take individual pictures with all of you outside.”

For a second, the warriors just looked at each other in silence as they were stunned.

Then, the room exploded in chaos as they immediately abandoned their tables. There was laughter, shouting and movement everywhere all at once. They rushed towards the exit like nothing could stop them. And that was the case because not even the guards stood a chance.

The few who seemed to be their leaders at the academy tried to shout orders so they could organize them, but there was too much chaos and too much excitement.

I glanced at Tyler and despite everything I was going through, like what my father and Davina had done to me in that dungeon, I smiled a little…because his plan was brilliant.

When we started taking pictures, we smiled and laughed where we were expected to do so. This was what they wanted from us and we were the ones who needed them more. They just didn’t know it.

As Tyler posed with one guy, I noticed him lean in slightly. He then whispered something quickly.

The guy nodded immediately with wide eyes.

“I want my picture taken outside the academy,” he said loudly.

“Of course,” Tyler replied smoothly.

The guards barely reacted from where they were as it still looked like it was part of the event.

We moved farther out and the crowd followed, but most of them were distracted as they argued over whose turn it was.

Then, when the perfect opportunity presented itself, Tyler moved closer to me.

“Now,” he whispered.

We slipped away in just a few steps at first, then more as we used the bodies, the noise and all the confusion as the cover. The guy Tyler had whispered to, moved with us naturally because that was the plan.

No one stopped us or questioned it.

Within seconds, all the warriors were behind us, their figures now seen at a distance.

The three of us began heading towards the restrooms when Tyler flashed a cool grin to the guy helping us out.

“You’ll definitely get more photos,” he promised him. “All you have to do is stand guard and make sure no one comes near

the restroom.”

The guy placed a hand on his chest like he was honored. “Of course. I won’t let anyone through.”

Leaving the guy behind, Tyler and I moved inside the restrooms. He mentioned that Jess was waiting inside and that was actually crazy to think about. She was in the men’s restroom.
